For those that have installed an amp to upgrade their stereo, where did you put the amp?

Some have put them in the front behind the windshield cowling, others have used space in the hardbags. Check out the Tech Reference forums for this How-To from Dain: http://www.vision-riders.com/bb/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=6938&pos...

Here's one I have been looking at. And I know they make good products.

This is the one I have coming. I looked at the Biketronics version but could not see where they have a high level input to be able to hookup to the Vision stereo.

I have installed the amp. I had to take half the fairing apart but I managed to install it on top of the left side fuel tank. I have it paired up with some Pioneer TS-A1372R speakers. The amp has an adjustable output which I have set at about 1/3. So far sitting in my garage(due to ridiculous amounts of winter here...grumble, grumble) with the stereo set at 20 it is exceptionally loud. Once you start going above that you start to notice a little distortion. Should be more than enough for cruising down the road at 80 mph. I feel it was an excellent addition. Cant wait for spring cause it will feel like a new bike with the upgraded stereo and the cams that I installed this winter. I guess there is one bright side to not being able to ride.

So you used this one?: http://www.mhinstruments.com/products/rr_raw200.htm

Can you explain what wires went where or how you wired it. I want to upgrade the speakers and add an amp but I don't want it in the bags. (I have a street).

Any pics? Thanks, Matt.

I was actually thinking of installing this unit because of the built-in EQ. Granted I'm just using it for the front speakers but it does support 4 speaker output (but not input).

As Ian explained! Thanks Ian!
Yes very nice amp! As you know I have it already installed it in my bike and it Kick's Butt!
IT DOES NOT PLUG INTO OUR HEAD UNIT!!! But no big deal cut plugs and hardwire...any stereo shop can do it! Also here are a couple of youtube videos so can judge yourself!!! Very impressive amp! there's a Low/High gain in the back of amp, i have mine set at High for deeper base. I have this amp paired with infinity5032cf speakers all around (4). Our draw back is our stock size which is 5-1/4 but with good speakers like i have I still can do a block party! LOL
Look how it moves the Harley's 6x9's and the base box!!!

Eric - Looks like a clean install. Care to describe how & where you hooked into the existing wiring? Also where'd you get your power from?

Your info would make a great Tech-Reference thread. Got any photos of the install process?

I have a question about installing the amp in the saddlebag. Doesnt the Alpine unit put off any heat? The MH Instruments amp has heat sinks on both sides of the cover and recommend in the install manual to ensure there is air movement wherever it is mounted.

No my cousin did the wiring as he used to work for Cambridge sound works back in the day, and now works for a company that does home audio installations. I was doing Lloyd's intake plate, VFC3 and IAC. She is all back together now and sounds awesome!

The best part of the system is sound quality as Alpine advertises and make sure to set amp on the back to high/gain but start slow with volume...don't want you to hurt speakers!

For those that have installed an amp to upgrade their stereo, where did you put the amp?

I got mine done and working! It sounds nice! I used the Alpine KTP 445 and mounted it on top of the left gas tank.

That is what I thought. What I have found so far.... Not really much louder - but - 1000 times better sounding - More bass and crisper highs... Better depth...
I used Polk Audio DXi 525's.

Hey Guys,
I hate to bring up a dead post but..... I mounted the Rockford Fosgate PBR 300x4 (Radio Teacher's Install idea). It all sounded pretty darn good until I ran through a Monsoon in Michigan Earlier this month. Its FRIED....
I had it mounted on top of the left side gas tank tucked as forward as possible and barely visible from the top side. I used the Polk Audio Speakers with 14 Gauge wire and it was pretty respectable sounding.
Anyway, I guess I am going to try to find somewhere else to put it. I do not want to put it in a baggage compartment due to heat dissipation and I don't want to drill holes in my bags or mount fans in it. I pack those things full when the wife and I are out on a ride... So anyone else have a better location idea?

Nope, not really. I thought about sticking an amp inside the body of the trunk. One could be installed in the neck but I'm talking about inside of the body, between the frame and body...

My Alpine is in the same spot and I've been through plenty of "Holy shit I'm going to die" rain storms. Still going....

It is mounted on top of the left gas tank? I think it is a great spot for conceal-ability and ventilation.
I ordered another one and I am going to put it back in the same spot.... yeah I know... probably not a great idea. But I am going to mold some plexiglass to attempt to protect it this time and seal up any case gaps with silicone (high temp).

I am open for suggestions as its not cheap to replace these every 6 months....

If you want some more pics, I am about to reinstall mine and would be happy to take some. I haven't taken the time to look at cooks link yet. It was a nice install if they are the same ones I looked at a few months ago.
There is quite a bit of room up there, but learn from my mistake and protect the amp as much as you can....
When the bike is parked on the stand it exposes my amp a bit to the elements, for what its worth. I will be making a plexiglass protector for this amp.

Just let me know if you need more pics/info.
If it is your first install ever, make sure you put a fuse within 6 inches of your power connection at the battery and use a minimum of 10 gauge wire. (I am not trying to insult your intelligence, I just dont want you to have problems. I have 30+ years of audio install experience and I have owned a company that did audio/video installs. I am not claiming to be an expert but I know how to do these things really well. Please do not hesitate to ask me or anyone else questions.

Search on Radioteachers install if you need some other ideas as well.

I used 3 amps. There is one on each side of the windshield motor for the rear speakers. The main amp for the front spkrs is under the left front speaker mounted on top of the gas tank (you can barely see it). Four years of riding every day rain, shine, or hail (except when snow or ice on roads).

Very Impressive! I bet she rocks the house! You dont have any power A/C delivery issues with all of that gear? The alternator is 50 amps right? Just curious if you used a capacitor or anything for maintaining peak power.
Thanks! That is serious for sure.
I was in a monsoon when mine went out but it sounds like that should not matter from your post. I have to wonder if the Hawg wired amps are somewhat Marine style and sealed up for cycle use as the Rockford is not really meant to be in the elements.
Thanks you for sharing!!!

There are no power delivery issues. Those little 4.5 inch speakers don't take much to drive them. A capacitor is not needed at all.

The Hawg Wired system is not "marine certified", but they are made for motorcycle use. Water spray has no effect on the amps or the spkrs.

I returned my amp that died to Rockford as it was only 7 months old. I wasn't sure if it had gotten wet or not but really did not know. I have always used Rockford amps and have never had any issues with them in 20+ years.
In the meantime I purchased another one just like it and weather proofed it the best I could (I will post pics on that asap). I just found out last night they have sent me a brand new one.
I thought that was pretty cool and wanted to share a good customer service experience with you guys.
Ride Safe!

Follow up on previous good experience;

To be clear, they are not happy about warranty replacements. I got quite an attitude like they were doing me a huge favor by replacing an amp that was junk right out of the box. Beware if you get it like everyone else in the world on the internet for half of the suggested retail price ($275 msrp). They really dont like that! I cant imagine paying more than $150 for this amp.
Over the years i have purchased at least 15 rockford amps, but I have purchased my very last Rockford amp.
Good luck!

Not to be rude. But if you are asking this please take it to someone that knows what they are doing. It will save you alot of money, trouble and headaches. There are so many things that can and will go wrong if you are dealing with electronics that you do not know how to properly install. Sorry.

I printed the first post out with the wire colors. Very helpful, thank you. FYI, no changes on the 2013.

I think I'll go with the Alpine rather than the Fosgate...would prefer the left tank placement over the side box tho...

No, but is sounds WAY better than stock. Just don't expect TOO much from 4.5" speakers...

Yep, solid install, I finally followed suit and did the left saddlebag with an Alpine
PDX-F4 and it rocks. I used some wet dry vac filter in front of the fan on the outside to help with dust.
I also fit 6.5s in the front.
I was curious if you vented the top of the box or added a second fan for exhaust?

Thanks!

Ditch, My fan blows out of the bag area. I cut a small section of the rubber trim seal at the bottom of the bag to pull air through. No water or diust comes in.

SOUND CANCELS OUT AT VOLUME 11 or more while bick is moving just ideling it goes all the way up. I have used 2 differnt AMPS but when my volume is turned up past 11 on both the sound cancels out while playing the radio or my phone or ipod and I have to turn in down or even sometimes have to turn it off for a few minutes The first one after a while one of the the wireing would short out it was a yellow wire and have to be replaced wireing harness that comes with the amp so I got a upgraded AMP the AMP i have now ALPINE MRV 5300 min 75 watts per chan 120 Max about 500 total

I hate to ask a dumb question but, I will....
What are the ratings on the speakers?
Also, have you checked resistantance on each speaker? A lot of times the support for the speaker terminals will break and or the crossover wiring on the speaker will short out. Check your resistantance with an ibm meter. Hope that helps...

I have been told that a Capacitor would take care of it my storing power so that the amp doesnt need to draw power from the battery all the time

I personally would not use a capacitor on such small speakers. normally you would use a capacitor on a subwoofer the draws a lot of power not midrange speakers.

That's strange, unless your bike just isn't providing enough amperage for your amps draw. My alpine has under and over voltage proetection and yours probably does as well. The first thing I would do is just confirm that the amp is going into protect mode then you obviously have to find out why. Turn your fader all the way to the front and turn it up to see what happens, then try the backs by themselves. At least you can isolate which speaker and or wires need attention. Make sure your speaker wires from the amp are adequate size, at minimum 14 gauge and preferrably 12 gauge. If it is not an under volt / under amp or a shorting speaker wire you need to make sure its not an overtemp issue with the amp.
Hope that helps, sorry for errors but I am doing this from my pos phone.
