Ruskin, Fl | So ther are 14 of us riding from Florida to Kentucky for our national rally. We took some back roads from Canton Ohio to the Dragon. We come around a sharp turn at a good clip and there is a RR crossing sunken about 8 inches. Before I could brake we bottomed out pretty hard.
At the next fuel stop I can't open the fuel door. Lots of grief from all the HD riders in the group. Any way, I get out some tools and pull the radio. The cable is no longer snapped into the fuel tank cover. Give it a tug a pull the pin out and get the door open. Used black electric tape to keep it closed.
I just went and pulled the bike apart assuming I was just going to snap the cable back in. Nope, not with my luck. The tab is broken. Put it back together and re-instal the electrical tape.
That whole piece of bodywork has to be replaced. Dealer quoted $118, which I thought was cheap.
Anybody else have this issue? I have the little ear that broke off, but doubt glue will hold. Plus if it lets go, I can't get fuel without a royal PITA.
Anybody come up with a fix for this?

New Bohemia, VA | Bummer. My doohickie broke too. I don't remember exactly what I did, but it had something to do with an old clip and some baling wire to hold the sheath in place. I don't like the orginal set up and I hope Victory fixed that in later years, because when I seen it I went "huh?". It's working fine at the moment and I plan on giving it a more permanent fix, but it has been working fine since November when I replaced the ignition switch. |

| Say check your handle bars to see if they have play in them. Not sure why a had dip would break it but ya never know. |

New Bohemia, VA | I wouldn't rule anything out. However, I don't know how mine was staying put before I removed my ignition switch, but the cable tab just fell off. That's why I say that it is a very poor design. It doesn't surprise me that a good jolt would dislodge a percarious hold. The handle bars have nothing to do with pull, it is a clean shot from the ignition switch and around to the side fairing mount. |

| Well mine broke in Knoxville tn this last March. i was headed to the Dragon,stayed overnight in Knoxville. My tank wes almost empty,som next morning I went to a gas station turned the key and nothing happened! So i took the dash panel off and saw a cable hanging down towards the tank door,I pulled it out and the door popped open. After I put in 5and 1/2 gallons of gas I shut the door and it just popped open again,so i went a few blocks to a walmart and got some velcro tape three squares on each side of the door and one on the door . This worked till I got backhome two days later. once home I took it apart and found a pice of plastic shapped " C " piece below the door. I went to a dealer in Indy and found that it might be covered under warrenty and went back home waiting for the service guy to call and let me know if Victory extened warrenty would cover it ,as he said he thought it would wihthout any problems. By the time I got home a message on the phone said no and the cost for them to do the replacement would be about 225.00 for parts and labor. I bought some epoxy for plastic and fixed it ,cost was about 5.00. Its still holding with no problems. After seeing this post it may be a design flaw just starting to surface. What I find difficult to do is have the dealer replace the headlight bulb!!! Talk about a pai in the butt!! Very poor design to say the least,told my wife if and when the headlight goes out again I'd think about trading it in on a Harley  But that won't happen,I'll either do it again or find someone with small hands!! |

| I had that happen too. I replaced the panel. I wasn't happy about having to buy it, but it was an easy fix. |

Just went through this. I fabed a piece of stiff plastic and screwed it in place to the original position works great.
My dealer told me October ot get a replacment. |

Ruskin, Fl | Thanks guys. I'm assuming it was the jolt but it may have just been when it was going to break. I have plan in mind to try when I return. I'll take pics and post if it works. In the meantime you can hardly tell it had tape on it. |

Ruskin, Fl | I made it back home from KY and will work on the repair tomorrow. Just and FYI that I was not the only bike damaged by the tracks. BTW they are in Turtle Town someplace near the Cherhola Skyway. A guy with a Suzuki bent the mount for his rear brake switch and it shorted out. 2 HDs with damage. One cracked his exhaust pipe and lost his shifter shortly after. The other lost his Sat. radio (power) and had some issue with his rear lights being knocked out.
So while it may be a poor design I'm sticking with my story that the RR tracks did it. |

Great post!!! Someone broke mine on the glovebox lock. I can use the same fix.
What they did was to glue the cable in place so you cannot remove the panel without braking the glue...
I do not know who did it....I wish I did.

Beer Collins, Colorado (there is no fort) | Since I heard of this happening a while back I've been turning my key to retract the plunger when closing the lid and then releasing-that's the way Gramps taught me to close to cover of a pocket watch too-Brian |

Albuquerque NM | Nice job on the fix, the next time I have that panel off of my bike I'm going to reinforce it as well. An ounce of prevention and all, otherwise I'm going to follow byteN2it's example and treat it gently.
BTW I had to do a similar fix to my fuel door, as it had broken off its hinge. So the last time I had it apart I took some thin aluminum sheet metal, cut it to fit drilled a couple of holes through it and glued it back together. I can't recall right now, but I think I also put a couple of pop rivets into it too. |

Ruskin, Fl | Thanks. I haven't had an issue with the glovebox cable. My latch broke off the glovebox door and got JB weld also.
My bike ran and looked great on my 2200 mile trip this weekend. I planned on keeping it for a while, than I saw the 2013 Ness Vision. Love the red with black flames... |
