I posted several weeks ago regarding renting a Vision for my Arizona-Southern Utah trip and anybody that used to rent them is out of the business. I looked from Vegas to Phoenix. So I end up renting a 2012 Road Glide Ultra since I felt that was the closest to my Vision. I've been on it 5 days and these are my observations. It definitely isn't as comfortable; doesn't handle nearly as good, although it does have a great lean angle; it doesn't have heated seat or grips and I have certainly missed those on these chilly mornings; it has a 103 CID engine but it feels like it is missing a lot more than 3 cubes-I find my self contemplating whether or not to pass an RV on a stretch where I wouldn't think twice with my bike; the wind/weather protection is not as good as the Vision.
What I do like about the Road Glide is it has an awesome sound system and the cruise control is very smooth although if there is a way to bump the speed up or down, I haven't figured it out yet. I have ridden an Ultra classic a couple years ago on vacation and I like this bike a lot more and if I never rode a Vision I would probably believe this is a great bike. One thing that really bothers me about this bike though, is I get this oscillating feeling when cornering similar to wind buffeting-it almost feels gyroscopic.
This morning I left Torrey, Utah heading for Page, Az via route 12 which leads you through Grand Staircase Escalante with rain projected all day, but not 20 miles into the ride it turned to snow at 8500 feet elevation. I pulled into a scenic overlook with a restroom and turned on the weather band radio and they had issued a winter storm warning. Five minutes after I pulled in, two couples from Germany pulled in on Ultra Classics. After 20 minutes they decided to head back to Torrey and I decided to press on but after about a mile the road surface was getting bad so I returned to Torrey. I literally thought it was going to be my last ride-even with lots of layers, a heated shirt and rain
gear i was so cold i couldn't move my fingers anymore and my head was doing some strange stuff. So tomorrow I have to double down and get to Phoenix by 4pm so I can return the bike, catch a flight back to Connecticut and kiss the best bike I will ever own.
For any of you folks that have never had the chance to visit this part of the country, I strongly recommend it. Pictures can't begin to give you the perspective of the beauty here. We are fortunate to live in a very beautiful country.

Great info, I really enjoyed the comparison with the Road Glide.

Wish I would have known, I would have come down and rode with you for a day, I don't get on this site often enough. I have led a group through "the loop" (Arches, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce) each of the last two years. I have found some great places to stay and a few I will never bother with again.

That pass out of Torrey gets close to 10k feet, but after that you drop into some of the coolest roads and views I have ever been on with everything from sandstone to redrock to pines. Love it!

You are right, there isn't anywhere in the world like the views you see in Southern Utah, I'm lucky enough to live just a couple hundred miles away.

Next time you lead that loop, let me know. I would love to go. I have relatives in Ivins that I can drop the kids off at.
