I wish this law that passed in Illinois would go national!!

A new law that will go into effect in 2013 stipulates that since motorcycles are sometimes not able to trip the magnetic sensors at traffic lights, they will be able to pass through the light.

The new law states that after a "reasonable" amount of time waiting at a red light, the motorcycle will be able to proceed if there are no other oncoming cars. The law will not cover any motorcycles traveling in cities where the population is over 2 million people.

I can't tell you how many times I waited, then waited some more until I just went waiting for a light to change that I knew wouldn't by my own presence alone.

I was told by my Driver's Ed instructor that any vehicle can proceed cautiously through a red light after reasonable amount of time. I took that as fact never questioning it because it came from my teacher. After reading this post I now wonder if that is actually true. ???

This video has some helpful hints on tripping traffic lights. Even though the video targets bicycles the concept is the same for motorcycles.

It is nice to hear that there are legislators willing to give special consideration to motorcyclist. I would have a problem with determining what a reasonable amount of time may be, and where are the population numbers posted?

Can't say that I've experienced the problem with the Vision unless I'm stuck behind someone else who hasn't positioned themselves properly to trip the sensor. Just need to make a habit of looking on the road surface or overhead for where the sensor is located.

This was a problem here years ago with the first sensors - I learned to do the 'wait, look around, check for cops, if ok - GO! '

It is RARE now when it happens - usually in very quiet traffic areas (not worth the cost of replacing the old cranky sensor) But the sensors have been replaced with newer equipment as part of an ongoing program everwhere else.

The law was passed last year. I believe the amount considered a "reasonable amount" was 2 minutes. I've waited for lights longer than that in my truck.

Don't have that problem much on my Vision but on the rare occasion that I ride the Harley it's all too common.

Indiana just put in the new systems, I could stop and trigger the old with no problem. The new will not work so I run it. I am not going to be a sitting duck to get smashed. I stop look both ways then proceed. I will go in front of a judge declare my case. Here is something else the idiots have done. If the new system has a power failure it has to be rebooted. Power comes on but the light does not work. Now you have a by-pass with 15 lights in a row and all the power goes off, you have some pissed off cops. I watched this street department girl try to reset the highway light one time. She never got it reset. Half of a hour later the state DOT shows up to get the light back in time. The old lights worked on a rotary drum when the power comes back on it just starts to turn again like a distributor does making the switches where it let off. The new system is digital, it has to be started. Talk about job security.

Here's IL's statute. Have to wait at least 120 seconds.

625 ILCS 11-306(c)3.5. In municipalities with less than 2,000,000 inhabitants, after stopping as required by paragraph 1 or 2 of this subsection, the driver of a motorcycle or bicycle, facing a steady red signal which fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time not less than 120 seconds because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle or bicycle due to the vehicle's size or weight, shall have the right to proceed, after yielding the right of way to oncoming traffic facing a green signal, subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign as required by Section 11-1204 of this Code.

Dan - I put your Google link in html but it still doesn't work.

In Mass, som intersections have a special sensor for motorcycles right at the front stop line. They've stenciled a little white bike symbol on the spot.

Minnesota has had the law for 3 years now. You half to come to complete stop. You can only go when there is no on coming cars.
Is it good maybe if a cop see's you and doesn't like the way you did it now he can stop you and if you had a drink or two not good. If your in a accident your at fault even if its legal

just type in red light changer into google. it is a strong earth magnet that goes under your bike. it is suppose to make your bike as big as if it were a car or truck sitting over the sensor in the road. I have one on my guzzi and it works well. I don't have one on the vision and I don't know if it will mess with the electronics of the vision. my guzzi is of a early year before electronics. here in N.C. we have the same law that is stated above.

Here in Wisconsin according to my Hupy and Abraham card it goes like this: In Wisconsin, a cyclist needs to wait only 45 seconds. A cyclist can not violate the right of way of other vehicles or pedestrians. As for me it always give me a super high attention level lookin for cages or any thing else that will take me out when I do this. Have only done this a couple of times, kinda gave me an "Outlaw" feelin if you know what I mean.......
