It always amazes me that some keep trying to reinvent the proverbial wheel.
I have NO idea how much oil companies spend on researching their products. But my guess would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. With that said, I am always going to take the easiest and I bet the best route in taking care of my motorcycles/autos. After more than 50 years of riding and driving I have yet to lose an engine - let's all knock on wood for me- in these years all I have done is follow the recommendations of the manufacturer. Use the rated oil -viscosity and the other ratings and I think I won't go wrong. Less headaches and by far less worry. Just a thought from an "ol rider"!

I never get involved in these threads, but I enjoy reading the different comments from the experts. My opinion is the lubricant companies do a whole lot more research on their product than the auto manufacturer, or in this case motorcycle manufacturer who has to do research on thousands of different components... Then of course you have the died in the wool dino companies who are trying to instill confusion to save their companies from the more progressive lubricants.... Grab a manual from a high end car like a Porsch and check their recommendations and recommended change. I think the main thing to be concerned about in our case is the Clutch and stick with a lubricant designed for the wet clutch. Myself, for over 30 years I have used nothing but synthetics in my cars, trucks, motorcycles and street rods and have only once had a problem. That was a clutch that went out on my Venture in Nashville at 128,000 miles, most of that towing a Bunkhouse popup.I also never use additives....Never had to replace an engine and my truck has over 220000 miles towing a 36 ft fifth wheel...The tour bus company I drive for runs only on Amsoil synthetic andmy bus has close to a million miles on the second engine... Oh one more thing, I ran car tires on two bikes, a Yamaha Stratoliner and Yamaha Venture for combined mileage of around 60000 miles....Once this Vision tire goes it will be running Mobile 1 and a car tire.

In this day and age there really is no "bad" oils. As long as you follow the recommendations of oem.

Back in the '80s I had a clutch go out on one bike using Castrol, so avoid that brand!

I remember it well - Had about 40k hard miles on her, was riding in a parade in temps around 100 deg for about 2hrs. Constant reving, goosing around, circles, fast acceleration, hard braking. I feathered that clutch like a kinky Amsterdam hooker does a rich German, and then BAM... Clutch failed!

Damn Castrol...

Darksiding is like oils...Do want ever makes you happy...I will continue to stick with the Vic oil and Dunlop tires as I have had "ZERO" issues with both....JMHO

Not sure what makes people want to care what others do with their property. Ride your ride.

I just change engine oil and fork oil at the same time: 30,000 miles or five years. My 2008 is running fine. Did I miss something?

I've used this on previous bikes and been very happy with it, although I am currently still on Vic oil (2009, 41k).

How tough was it to change the fork oil? Special tools, spring compressors, etc?
