All,

Please post your CB Software and Hardware version number if you are experiencing too low of a CB Volume.  After installing the new pipes, I have my CB volume set to 30 and it is still too low.  There maybe a fix for this with CB version 5.09, but it will require the CB unit to be swapped out.  The hardware can not be flashed directly by the dealers.  If anyone has CB Software version 5.09, is your CB volume to low.

CB SW Version:  4.08A

CB HW Version:  5

Here are the instructions to find your hardware and software versions.

1. Turn the ignition switch to ACC and turn the radio off (Victory Motorcycles is shown on display)
2. Turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Turn ignition switch back to ACC.
4. PRESS & HOLD the #1 preset button and MODE button while turning the radio power ON.
5. The diagnostics mode is entered. Press MODE to toggle through the diagnostic functions to get to the CB Version Numbers.

6. To exit diagnostics press Power button.

Thanks,

Tim

Tim, I keep my volume set to 30 on the CB, I have stock pipes and have unusable volume on the CB at highway speed.
I checked mine and it's 4.08A and 5 as you've listed.
Was your volume ok before the new pipes?

Tim, I have CB SW version 4.13A and CB HW version 6 with stock pipes and the CB volume is not loud enough set at 30. Do you think we can get Victory to update the CB software with an exchange for free?

Does anyone know what the latest version of the stereo system software is? I am on SW version 4.13a and HW version 4 of the stereo system.

The volume was much better with stock pipes since the stereo/CB/intercom didn't have to compete with the louder pipes.  I think the stereo was designed and tested with stock pipes and not with stage 1 pipes.

Craig,

I have the same Radio version as you.  I think 4.13A is the latest version.

From what I have been able to find out, the CB can not be flashed by the dealer.  This means the CB will either have to be exchanged, or sent into the factory/lab and flashed there.

Ask your dealer to check to see how you can get version 5.09 on your CB.  I already called mine to get it into the works.

I do not have any problems pulling my unit and sending it in for a reflash.  I would just like to get the CB volume resolved.

Sincerely,

Tim

I have CB SW version 5.09A, CB HW version 6, Stereo SW version 4.13A, HW version 4. My volume is plenty loud on stereo, CB and intercom. I never need to run the volume over about halfway, and I'm hard-of-hearing. However, my helmet microphones seem to pick up a lot of ambient sound, such as the intake noise and wind noise. Other riders complain that my CB transmissions are too noisy. I can hear what they are complaining about, in my own headset, when using the intercom. There is a lot of wind noise, even when we are using full-face helmets. My dealer says that Victory says to not use J&M headsets, which I am. Is it possible that the J&M headsets are a lot more sensitive than the ones sold by Victory? What headsets are you all using?

Ronnie,

What pipes do you have on your bike ?  I would like to make sure the CB SW 5.09A works with non-stock, louder pipes.

I have both J&M Elite Full Face headset and the Victory Headsets.  The Victory Headset mics can be very noisy if they are in the wind.  My J&M Elite mic is pretty quiet as long as I am not in strong cross-winds that are blowing up my helmet.  I have tried to locate the mic away from the wind as much as possible.

Thanks for your response with the 5.09A.

Sincerely,

Tim

I had suffered throught the low CB volume for months and been hounding my dealer for a resolution and finally found the simple fix. It was the location of the speakers in the helmet. I use the stock victory headset and the dealer told me that if the speakers are not aligned with your ear you loss up to 70% of the sound. A simple relocation and now I can hear clearly with the CB volume set at 10 where before it was pegged at 30. I am also able to hear the music a lot better than before at half the volume setting.

Tim, I still have the stock pipes. Slyder is right about the speaker position in the helmet making a HUGE difference in perceived volume. I had to play around with mine a bit before getting them in the right position. Fortunately, J&M sent an extra mounting pad with each set, and the velcro system lets you try several positions. I'm going to have to swap bikes with my Goldwing riding buddy to see if the noisy CB transmissions are really as bad as he lets on. He is as loyal to the Goldwing as some folks are to the other American V-Twin motorcycle. He's still disappointed that I didn't buy a new Goldwing .

BTW, he purchased the 5 year extended warranty when he got his new bike. He likes to brag about how good Honda has treated him and how the warranty has more than paid for itself. I guess he is right, since he has had to use it numerous times .

Ronnie,

I am aware of the speaker positioning issue.  That is not the issue I am having.  The CB volume was fine with the stock pipes, but could not compete with the non-stock pipes.

Does anyone have CB SW version 5.09 and non-stock pipes ???

Sincerely,

Tim

Tim,

I have the Victory S1L2 pipes. The Intercom is fine but I have not tried the CB. I will check it today and report back.

Be sure to check the volume level at highway speeds, not stopped and at idle.  The pipes are louder at speed.

Thanks for the response.

All,

Victory replaced my CB unit under a warantee repair and swapped it out for a newer hardware/software version.

New CB SW Version:  4.13A

New CB HW Version:  6

The old CB module was unuseable with the CB volume all the way up to 30 and aftermarket pipes.  I now can hear fine the newer CB module with the volume set to 20 with the Big Honkers installed.  The new CB moudule's volume is not as loud as the other volume levels (e.g. IPOD, XM, FM, etc), but at least I can hear it now at highway speeds.

I'm not sure of the version, dealer said it was correct.

Before and after stage 1 level 1, the volume output was still too low at 30.

Accidentally broke my stock antenna on a trip last week, and when I got home, I remembered an old Firestick antenna I had from a few yaers back.

Surprised me when it fit the threads on the mount.

Checked the SWR's and now I can turn the volume level down to 10 and hear the CB just fine!

Seems that the stock antenna doesn't pull a strong enough reception to give the volume necessary, because this antenna made ALOT of difference!

I have to admit, i am surprised at the price for the OEM antennae compared to the firestick or even the JTM and you can at least tune the Firestick and JTM antennae.

Which FireStik are you using (model - length)?  It is great that the fitting are the same.

I ride with a goup and the Harley guy's CB's are made by Midland.  They really have great short and long distance RX/TX using just the short rubber whip antennas that are @ 1 foot long.

Tim,
It is the Red 24" Firestick. I've had in on several different vehicles, and it has always performed well!
