This let's you know what they were thinking and how it will apply to later production models.  Bye-bye tube frames.

I don't know, but I still think it's an excercise in ego, and a waste of a bunch of $$$. Funny thing to me though is this. Had they made a COMPLETE bike with a rear suspension; I would prolly feel diferent. Hell I would most likely be in love with it if they had used a single sided swing arm with a sprocket rotor

Maybe you are not old enough to remember the "concept" cars Buick had in the "old" days. Also look up concept cars at the Detroit car show and you will see many. They put together ideas and see what people like so they might incorporate them in later models.
One of the guys at the show was taking surveys and he wanted to know what people thought of the tank. His concern was that it's part of the bike so you can't go to J&P cycles and throw different one on.
Like they said, no it won't be produced with a wood seat. Why not I figured. Tommy has a diamond plate seat on his old HD.

Kevinx you got a post before I finished. I read your thoughts but every HD wearer (maybe they were owners too) LOVED it at the show. I did not hear one bad comment. I spent a few hours talking to people about the 10th.

Here's a CONCEPT alternative fuel motorcycles !!! A Vision Scooter !! something "green" that the motorcycle enthusiasts would actually want and that helps the environment. No trees, no air, no life, no bike... no matter what you think of it personally, you cant get around the reality.

The Core really is a cool bike and I liked it just as I did the Vision when I first saw it. It is a concept bike so the likelihood of actually riding one would be slim to none, but I would like to sit on it or see someone actually riding it. I cannot believe folk complain about the wooden seat but don't complain about the pleather seats that are standard on most premium motorcycles.

I'm giving it some time and I'm going to get mine covered with leather, which should be on every bike made that travels the highway. Having been on both I have a great appreciation for the leather saddle. A wooden seat can be comfortable if molded right for the derriere, but then again, every motorcycle sold is a canvass to be customized by the pilot.

The most amazing quote to me was Greg Brew, sitting in a chair, fiddling with the frame:

"We can tear this bike down and put it together again in much less than an hour."

As a Vision owner, that made my head spin.  We can't even change a frickin headlight bulb out in less than an hour.  Even though the CORE is a non-working prototype, that is an amazing leap.  As technology makes things more reliable but more complex, the designers ability to have components take on multuple tasks is going to be really fun to watch.

Of course, if you ding the frame, you just took out a bunch of other stuff too.  Life is a balance.

Thats not what he said, but you also need to consider the bike has NOTHING other then wheels, and a motor

My mistake. Fo some reason I remembered him saying they could take it apart, OR put it together in an less then an hour. Re-watching it though I see that when he says WE he means a TEAM of people. In endurance racing they can pretty much rebuild a complete car in an hour with a smooth running, and practiced team

I get what you're saying Kevin and I agree.  Even though the bike is incomplete, the whole concept is modular and quick disconnect.  Just the thought of being able to get to things in a matter of minutes instead of hours is pretty appealing.

I think it would be cool to be able to get to the rear end of Vision without having to start at the front and then take the seat off.  A quick-disconnect trunk would totally change the way I use my bike.  Twist a handle in the base, disconnect the electrics and swap out the cover plate for the trunk in 30 seconds.  The way it is now, I have the cover plate but I'm afraid the paint on the bike will fade noticably before I take the trouble to use it.

Part of the genius behind the Vision is how it is all put together with no visible fasteners or hinges.  On the other hand, it is the least friendly machine I have ever owned when it comes to getting to routine things like lightbulbs.  If I lived up north and was not able to ride for months it wouldn't matter to me.  But, I live in an area that only gets a few days of ice a year and that is the only thing that keeps me from riding.  Spending days tearing the back end of the bike apart to put in a cool LED system takes all the fun out of it for me.

Maybe I should move north.  I kind of like the Canuks around here.   Nah.

My point of view (pretend you asked). Ever notice how the job in your garage takes 4 times longer than the same job at the dealership? Ever notice that putting something back on takes 3 times less time than it did taking it off? Ever notice that you drink more beer doing the disassemble, than you did doing the re-assemble? Ever notice how much more you talk to God when you are
taking your beloved Vision apart and then as if a miracle you begin thanking him when it all goes back together and you have no pieces left over? Lets all pray that within the 2 hours we damn God, then as if someone turned a switch we begin to thank him at the end...
we better be praying that God has a motorcycle too, otherwise he wouldnt understand what we were going through.

Every time I see the Core makes me want to jump on it and take it for a spin. My only concern is that if something gets dinged, it is the whole bike that is affected. But with that, what do you suppose would be the value of the frame if you had to swap out. If it is as easy as they say, you could have multiple frames in various schemes and just take an hour and you be riding your bike of the day.

Apart from the "ego" of the bike (which I happen to like), I think the real advance is in the exercise of using the chassis as a design element, a fuel cell, a intake port, a wire conduit, and oh yes, the complete spine of the bike. Manufacturing-wise, that's a grand-slam! Even if the bike never makes production, the R&D $$$ spent on this is, IMO, come back in spades in savings on future manufacturing techniques, not to mention the marketing mileage they gain as it is featured in magazines and visits to the IMS Victory booth. Once they view it at a show, they may not like it, but they discover they REALLY like that Vision next to it. Great Marketing takes many forms.
