I'm having problems with my Hot Water heater. I am thinking about getting a Tankless type . Has anyone here have one installed ? If you do are you happy with it?

I hear they save on fuel cost

Are you talking about for your home? I suspect so. When we built our custom home 4 years ago my builder thought I had lost my mind when I told him I did not want a water heater wasting space and energy in my garage. I had lived in Europe and had experienced a Rinnai unit for many years. I wouldnt have any other unit. I have a gas unit that is mounted on the rear of the house and it only comes on when you turn on the hot water. I heats my showers, dishwasher, washing machine, jacuzzi, and spigots.
You never run out of hot water, even when you lose electricity with a gas unit you still have unlimited hot water. We were the first house in our new community to have one, and since then our builder has installed about 22 of them in subsequent homes. What started
him pushing them was 3 years ago, ( we live in a community that coincidentally has a lot of retired people eventhough we ourselves are not), we had a huge storm and lost power for 2 days in the community. We opened our house to all of the elderly neighbors to use
for hot showers, heating anything they needed, etc etc. We never ran out of hot water for about 6 neighboring homes. Needless to say each of those homes now have a Rinnai unit. Original cost of a whole house gas unit was about 1400.00 which lets face it, is nothing. Our hot water heating bill is ZERO. And the best part is that by not having a huge ugly water tank in my garage I have more space for the motorcycles..... any other particular questions just email me VaParadox@aol.com

I second paradox, I also have a Rinnai water heater, and I have propane, but mine must not work the same way, because without power, there is no way for it to use the elctronic ignition. Unless he has a Uninterrupted power supply. But I digress.

I made the decision to use this when we built the house, and it truly is great. I paid a little more for the larger version, but we have several bathrooms, and I figured it was worth it. I have run 3 shower heads at the same time and never experienced any loss of hot water. I've run two of those shower heads (we have a double headed shower) for 2 hours one time when our two dogs rolled in horse crap and we needed to do an emergency cleaning. Never lost hot water.

If there is a downside, it is small, but you wait an extra minute or so for the hot water to get to the tap. It's not really long. If you waited 1 minute on a regual water heater, you might wait as long as 2 minutes if you are at a tap farther away from the heater. Since it's on demand, it doesn't start up until it senses the demand for hot water, which is why it takes an extra minute. Our kitchen is where I notice it the most. I haven't been able to remove the water restrictor, so it doesn't show "as much" demand. I say that in the interest of full disclosure since you asked. However, I would do it again in a minute. Our whole house uses propane, furnace, dryer, stove top, water heater, and a tap for my grill. In other words, we have a lot of use. I used about 800 gallons of propane all last year, and I used the hell out of the grill, and that by far is the most inefficient use.

When I researched them, I can tell you that they are not as good if you are using the electric versions. The recommendation was that if you have a larger house and want the electric version, to buy two and run them in series or parallel, I can't remember which. That could be more costly. But, I can tell you that you can claim an energy tax credit. So, that helps.

Hope that helps and feel free to ask any other questions. Not the normal forum question, but at least you know you're getting honest responses.

Great to hear the Bosch uses no electricity the flow of water generates the ignition I to have propane for the stove and hot water. I have been hearing about Tankless for a few years but I don't know anyone who has installed one . But I figured people who ride Visions might .

Thanks for the responses

I've been looking at one of those too. I had a similar setup in my house in Va. Beach before I sold it. Do it! A little more cost upfront was a big savings monthly. Even a 6 yr old electrical dependent system was 10x more efficient than a tank heater. Plus the non-stop hot water was awesome, even though it was just my ex and I using it, she used to take 20 min showers. If you have a family, that's the only way to go.
