I am putting together my plans for my 3900 mile/10 day ride in June of this year. Here is a website of my current plans- your comments and thoughts are welcome!

Unless there is a reason for the Phoenix area I'd move the southern border route up a bit. Like maybe up towards Lake Havasu area. Can't imagine Phoenix traffic being to good, no matter what time of the day you are there.

You have quite a bit of saddle time every day, and this doesn't take into account fuel and/or food stops. Depending on a few things like age, health, comfort and such you are asking for some fairly sore bodies. And sore bodies can equal agitated personalities which can equal some unhappy people which can lead to a trip being memorable for some wrong reasons and the possibility of it being cut short.

Doesn't look like you have budgeted any time to stop and see anything. I guess the way I look at this is that I'd much rather say we took a 10 day 2000 mile trip and had a great time and saw some beautiful sites versus we took a 10 day 3500 mile trip and we saw a lot of things at 70 m.ph. and we were so sore that we will never do one again.

But this is IMHO though.

Hard to comment on someone elses journey, I don't know what the motivations are for one. If you want ideas of what to try and incorporate...here you go.
1) add the Rocky Mountain Freedom Rally --June 19-21 Jackson, Wyoming
2) http://www.motorcycleroads.com/routes/RockyMtn/ID/ID_7.shtml

Looks like it could be fun but as others have noted it seems like an endurance ride. You on the Vision will probably be the least worn out.

You always need a plan and depending on how everyone is doing on the ride you do have alternative routes to cut back to the west as you are heading towards Canada.

BTW Congrats on the new Vision!

Like I said nothing is in stone- just my draft so far. I have allotted 20 min breaks every 90 minutes- and I am adding Sedona, and we are also planning on Zion. The three of us have done long rides in the past- 400-500 miles days, it isn't the easiest, but we can handle it

I did look at moving west of Phoenix- I saw there was a Victory shop there in Mesa.... thus the stop. I have ridden through Havasu/Vegas/Mesquite in June... that is no fun either...

VisionNWRider- I will keep you posted on the progress and any changes. My son's girlfriend is from Seattle- so we have a stop there for visiting her family- might drop her off there is she is acting up

Thanks for all of the comments!! I do appreciate them!

BTW- The motivation was to do a Boarder (Mexico) to Boarder (Canada) ride in about 10 days.... when we ride together as a group- we want time in the saddle... if there is something we want to stop at, we stop... for us, the fun is the ride.

can't really offer you many suggestions, I'll will say the journey is very doable and most likely will be very enjoyable. I'll make one prediction though, wife and son's gal will be riding the Vision before it is over....

That's what's awesome is everybody has their own preferences. A buddy of mine and I are going to complete 1/2 of the Route 66 ride (from Texas to California) in June. We've allotted 2 weeks for the trip because we're heading to the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater. I also have been looking for the worlds largest ball of twine.

Oh yea...we like to haul butt when we're riding.

Hey Comet,

I have been seriously considering doing a saddlesore 1000 or ironbutt...yada. I did 800 miles in a day a while back and it wasn't bad. I did get up and ride the next day but was a bit whipped.

I read through many of the suggestions on the ironbutt.com site. One that I read is VERY true. I have been riding many years and found that I fall into this...'Whether you are capable of riding 300 miles per day, or 1,000, the ability to make miles tends to decrease as the length of the trip increases. The most severe loss is in days 3 through 7, where Iron Butt types then level out to about 65% of their peak capacity.' (quoted from ironbutt.com http://ironbutt.com/tech/aow.cfm?AOWID=1)

I will be interested to hear how it goes. I have an '01 Kaw Vulcan that I turned into a Nomad that I have put lots of miles on. By the time 400 hit I was DONE for the day and almost done for a weekend. So, be prepared that your son/daughter (GF...whatever) may be ready for breaks. Longer than I guarantee YOU will be ready for.

Just something to consider.

I DO want to hear a report when you are back if you don't post while you are on the road.

Take care and have a fun and safe trip!

Oh yeah...they are absolutely correct about Phoenix traffic...avoid like the plague if you can!

I still got the stack of receipts sitting next to me from September 2007 when I went 1,024 in 19 hours and 1,500 miles in 34 hours, the Saddle Sore and the Bun Burner Iron Butt. Again, I've never sent the information in and probably never will. Fast forward to November 2008 I rode 1,200+ in 19 hours and was set to do 1,500 miles in 24 hours, but a storm got in my way. Anyway, I didn't even bother saving the reciepts at all this time as it wasn't worth the trouble if I wasn't going to send the stuff in. I've been riding again after 20 years since 2005, and the 2007 ride was on a '84 Goldwing with a leather seat and I had 3 hours sleep before starting. The 2008 ride was on the Vision and was much better. I started with about 5 hours sleep.

Now with all that said, check out the Iron Butt page on tips and so on. I don't agree with their assestment on "no caffine" as that is what I remember it said. That is a rule I broke because I live with it just like most other people. Stopping to get a cup of joe or a Diet Mountain Dew just fires you back up for the next two or three hundred miles. That's another thing, at best I was limited to 2 hours on the wing as I would stop and get gas around the 120 - 140 mile mark, the Vision I could go 3 plus with 200+ range on a tank. The Goldwing, I will admit I pushed it because of the lack of sleep prior, but on the Vision, I was ready to run the clock out but the winds were kickin' and the lightening was lickin' when I got to Winnie and had to pull in for the night. I found out the next day the interstate even flooded it rained so hard, so I would have landed in the ditch before it was over.

I believe I could get on my Vision and do it again tomorrow without any problems sitting in the saddle for so long, for me it is easy. But, I will say, don't push yourself at anytime. I rode the whole distance ready to give it up at any moment and I would have headed straight for the nearest U-haul place and loaded up the Vision and continued on at a leisurely pace. I don't mean I was wanting to give up, I mean that it wasn't that important to kill myself over, but with each mile behind me I was hungry for the next. If you do the ride for the Saddle Sore, it is easy, a relative term, to do it in 24 hours, plenty of time, but always stay ahead of your schedule, getting behind is hard to make up. I was trying for the Super Bun Burner that is the 1,500 mile in 24hours and as I said I was on MARK to do it. My stops were record stops, gas, relieve, bite and gulp in less than 15 minutes. Oh, again I was only doing this for my satisfaction, not for the certificate. When I stopped for the night, again, I was on the mark to make the trip and ready to do it. There's always this year to try it again.

varyder, I could be wrong, but I think the caffeine they are referring to here is the tablets, like No-Doz. They are very much against using stimulant drugs to do the ride. In fact, if they find out that you were No-Doz or something similar they will yank your certificate. However, I don't think coffee/soda breaks are a no-no.

I think my intent was to say that if you ride, your riding miles will decrease daily as you get tired and done for each day to the point that you will only ride about 65% of your max daily ride on any given day following the 3rd.

I thinks as long as you put some miles in before the trip and are mentally ready to do this kind of ride it should not be a problem.
I have done many trips where I will put in 600 to 700 miles a day over 3 to 7 days and they were very enjoyable, but that was the plan to go out and ride. I also enjoy the trips where you average 300 to 500 a day and stop at diffrent locations for a couple days along the way.
Some times I just want to go out and ride hard for days on end, I am relaxed though tired at the end but I find it enjoyable.
I hope to Ride to San Diego in 3 days spend 2 days there and then shoot back home in 3 days this fall.
I guess to me it just depends on the reason since I really enjoy all kinds of riding

Whatever distances you choose you can bet that the Vision Pilot won't be the weakest link.

I think I can concur with your statement, but without going to the site at this moment it leads you to believe that all caffine is a no-no, or maybe I'm reading into it. Maybe it is just as well, though I'll still do my iron butts, I'll probably never be a certificate holder, just not that disciplined to do all that stuff. You even have to have witnesses and so on, and I applaude those who do it and wear the patch proudly and the little license plate holder.

But the key is to be physically and mentally able to ride any distances and especially the endurance. I want to do the 48 states in 10 days ride as well, but there again, without discipline to keep up with all the little stuff I won't have a certificate but know I can do it.
