Does anyone know who makes the Victory Platinum jackets? My old Harley leather jacket is approaching 20 years old, and it's time for a replacement. I kind of like the Platinum jacket, but with the Victory mark up, it is at least $100 more than what most other manufacturers are asking for their jackets. I've looked at the Olympia jackets and are impressed. Anyone else have any high praises for jackets they have purchased lately? I'm looking for a four seasons jacket for riding here in Colorado. I ride down to the mid-20s as long as there is no snow or ice on the roads, and in the summer I'm in areas that are pushing 100 degrees. Of course, the jacket being water repellent is a positive thing, and I'm all that sppun up over the armor, other than it needs to be able to be removed!

Thanks in advance for your inputs!

Space,

I currently own the Platinum jacket but have had good luck with First Gear (Kilimajaro) and Tour Master (Cortech 3/4).  Newenough.com is the best site on the web for gear reviews of the stuff they sell: http://www.newenough.com/protective_apparel/textile_jackets_and_pants/?page=1  (Pace yourself.  Lot's of reviews and pics here.)

I'd give the Fieldsheer Adventure Touring Textile Jacket (in black or gray) a hard look.  It's about $100 less than the Platinum, has a built in storm collar and a very modern look to it.  The First Gear Kilimijaro 5.0 is the Swiss Army Knife of jackets and is the best bang for the buck but may not have the color combo you like.  Newenough sells leather stuff too and is a great company to buy from.  Good luck.

Thanks all! Songfan...since you own the Platinum jacket, what is your opinion on how it compares to the ones you recommended, such as the First Gear Kilimanjaro or the Fieldsheer? I saw they had the Kilimanjaro in at least a gray/black combo, so the color combo is not an issue for me. Some like the bright yellow/orange for visibility, but I'm an old fart who is set in his ways for a more subtle color in jackets. There are way too many large critters around where I live and ride, so I for the most part limit my riding to daytime.

Thanks again all for your responses!!

space,

Here's my opinion:  I really like the Platinum jacket but my main motivation for buying it was to support my local dealer and show some loyalty to the "brand".  I have never done that before in my life.  I love hanging the jacket in the entry way at work on a 25 degree day (or pouring down rain) just to erase any doubt as to who rode in that day.  (The jacket always hangs just below my helmet, which is facing backwards with the Vision Pilot sticker on it for all to see.)  I was always looking for the "best deal" but purchasing the Vision turned me into a shell of my former self as far as expense goes.  It is a great jacket and was worth the extra $100 just to make a statement.  It is a world class jacket.

Having said that, the Fieldsheer Adventure Touring and the First Gear Kilimanjaro 5.0 are every bit as nice.

I like the look of the black or black/silver Fieldsheer and the description of the outer shell makes it sound really well made.  The collar extrender is also a nice feature.

The Kilimanjaro has more storage spaces than any jacket on the planet.  I have an older model grey Kilimanjaro that I handed down to my son and it is a great jacket.  I rode the Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico (unpaved) 5 years ago and the temps ranged from 38 degrees on the Canadian border to 104 degrees on the Mexican border 11 days later.  I wore the jacket every day, including the 104 degree day and I do not recall being uncomfortable once.  (Lots of hydration.)

One of the main reasons I bought the Kilimajaro is because First Gear sells "Tall" sizes.  I'm 6' 3 with long arms and always have to buy a XXL in anything long sleeved just to sleeve length right but with the Kilimanjaro I went XL-T and it fits great.

Personally, I like the looks the Fieldsheer but you absolutely cannot go wrong with either one.

SongFan, I'm 6'4" and have the dealer bringing me in a Platinum Jacket to try on. I was disappointed that it's not available in tall. How do you find it for sleeve length while riding?

My old Jacket is a Joe Rocket Balistic 5.0. Great jacket, but after 5 yrs its sun faded in a few places so I'm looking for a replacement. The Ballistic is waterproof and has a zip out liner with meshed on the inside so when you open the 3 vents you get some cooling. I ended up buying a First Gear mesh jacket for the warmer days.

I'm hoping the Platinum will do all

Candu - I have a 2X Platinum and it fits great.  90% of the time I wear gloves with gauntlets so sleeve length is not an issue.  When I do wear shorter gloves there is about a 1" gap from the edge of the jacket sleeve to the edge of the glove.

The Platinum has vents out the ying-yang:  2 - 6" just below the collarbones, 2 - 10" running along the inside of the elbows, 2 - huge 12" vents under the armpits, 2 - 8" running along the shoulderblades.  All vents have waterproof zippers and my shirt has never had a drop of rain on it.  The only place where water could possibly get in would be around your neck, depending on your build.  (I'm a little over 6' 3 @ 260lbs and it seals up great without being too tight.)

The liner is nice as a fleece-lined windbreaker on its own. I wear it in the jacket with the fleece turned towards the shell so my arms slide in and out easier when it is installed.

Well thought out jacket.  Absolutely no regrets.

thanks for the info SongFan, sound like it will be too short. I grew up in the 70's with flood pants, you couldn't buy Levis long enough. I have this issue with short clothing.

Had a chance to try on the jacket at the dealers. It was long enough in the arms, but too tight in the shoulder area, and way too big in the waste. I tried tightening the adjustment straps, but it did not look right.
I think its a great jacket, but not built for me.

I've had that same jacket for more than 22 years and is still a good one. It's a Hein Geirke(sp) First Gear. Removable liner and fully vented. No regrets.

Those Hein Geirke's are first class all the way. My present outfit is by Joe Rocket, no complaints, the colour has faded from the sun, 5yrs and 50,000 miles later.

Think I'll keep what I got, the money will be better spent on trinkets for the new bike. Will be picking it up on the 8th, if the weather holds, the dealer is 2.5 hrs away.
