I notice everyone talks about using the 3rd generation Ipod Nanos.  Any advantage over the newer 4th generation (other than price)?

You will need an adapter to keep your 4th gen charged while riding. Apple changed some of the pins in the plug so now they can play your music but will need and adapter to charge the battery on older equipment. There are rumors that Victory is coming out with a new ipod cable to address this issue.

Here's a link to the adapter:

Thanks.  I don't see the logic in buying a $50.00 power cable when an Ipod will play for at least 20 hours on one charge.  For $10-$20 you can get an ac/dc charger and charge it overnight on the road (unless you're wilderness camping).

Be cheap like me. Go to a pawn shop and by, like I did, an 8GB Gen 3 iPod for $70 (or less). And that is what I paid in January 2009. I use it just for my Vision.

Now wait a minute, I think I got a 2nd generation Nano because the Vision couldn't deal with the 3rd. Now you're talking 4ths? I remember thinking how ridiculas it was that the 2nd gens were only about $50 less the the new models (3rd) on Ebay about a year ago.

Hadn't thought about a pawn shop.  A refurb 4 gig's going for around 75-90 on Ebay and the normal good online tech shops (newegg, tigerdirect, etc.).

Shyster,

I like Pawn shops better then eBay. Try before you buy. Take a set of headphones with you to shop. Make the shop power the unit up. Test the controls, backlight, and jog wheel. Make sure that the 4 GB or 8 GB on the back matches the memory in the iPod.

Find out what comes with it; 8GB memory, Headphones (clean them with Alcohol or toss them away), a USB cable, a charger or a case. My last deal had all of this for $70. I went to 5 shops that were less then 2 miles apart before I found one that would deal with me that had what I wanted.

One shop wanted $120 for the 8 GB gen 3. I asked if that was the best that he could do since I could buy an 8GB 4th Gen nano for $147 from Sams. He said "Yes" that was his best. I just turned and I walked out.

All in all I shopped for about an hour and found what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay.

Negotiating was easy. I would tell them "If I wanted to pay a new price for the iPod I would go to Sams. For about $140 dollars I can walk out with a new one with all of its parts and pieces plus a warranty. Why would I pay more then 50 cents on the dollar for the older, obsolete unit at a pawn shop?" "Come on get real?" "Would you pay this much? Why should I!!??" were my best lines for the sales guy. The manager agreed and the deal was done.

One manager said, "I have more in it then that." I told him "To bad for you.", wished him a good day and went down the road.

Give it a try.
