San Jose, CA | Well I knew it had gone too smooth today for something not to happen.
My first oil change on this bike at 6K.
I undid the drain plug. Oil drained. I looked at the plug, didn't see gasket/washer on plug. I thought that maybe it was stuck on bike like I've done before on my other bikes. I was not planning on replacing it this time, maybe next oil change. Anyhow, change the oil etc.
Cleaning up and next thing I notice as I drain the drain pan is that there is a copper washer in there. I'm pretty sure there was not one there to start so it must be from the Vic. Damn. I already put expensive 20-50 Amsoil in.
I torqued the drain plug to 15 foot pounds as per service manual. As far as I can tell there is no washer.
Will this be a problem? Will it make it to 10K for my next oil change where I will buy and place a washer? Or should I just swallow the cost and take out the drain plug and but the washer in as fast as I can?
Will it leak? Is there a seal? Can the seal handle the pressures of normal to aggressive riding? I can check oil often so that's not a problem.
I can handle a very slow leak. I just want to make sure I won't have a sudden complete loss of oil (not only for the motor but for my rear tire as it would be going over the oil).

| Remove plug and drain oil into clean container. Replace plug (with washer) and pour drained oil back in bike. Problem solved! |

| You better hope you didn't screw the pooch on this one. The bolt has a tapered end before the seat that is designed to compress the copper washer. Imagine what it did when you torqued it down against the case without the soft copper to compress. Bad move!
If you can get the plug to back out without making a bigger mess, do as savage recommends, then inspect the bolt/plug, drain hole and threads carefully before reinstalling everything. For the record it NEEDS a new washer every time you remove the drain bolt. It is copper so it will crush and seal, it isn't reusable. Buy a bag from the dealer so you have them. |

For what it's worth. I don't think it would have leaked. I backed out the plug, and backed and backed and backed, it did not start leaking until it was on the last thread.
Anyhow, inspected the plug, but the gasket on there, retorqued to specs etc. Hopefully now it still won't leak. I don't think it will, but I will obviously monitor it closely.
Will keep everyone posted.
Also painted by front panel glossy black today to see if I liked the look. Came out more flat black than glossy when compared to black on bike but it looks good, kinda mean. It will match my flat black helmet. I'm not sure if I will take it in to get professionally done (I did it for $6 all purpose can). I may sand it down, respray etc until I get the exact look I want but right now it looks pretty good. If you walk up to it you can tell it is amateur. But from 10 feet away you can't. Most of the time it looks ridden (it is not a show bike) so this may do for me.
Man...one is never done tinkering on a bike. Up next...those lovely silver love handles. |

Keep a spare gasket on the bench when you change the oil just put the spare gasket on and when you dump the old oil, put that gasket on the bench for next change. |

| Did the same exact thing on my '03 TC and noticed it in the bottom of the pan and almost ?!?!?!? a brick. Thought for sure I had messed up the threads/seal. Backed it out and replaced with warsher and could never tell the diff. It was a loong back out though and I wasn't smart enough to re-use the oil.... |

Prescott Valley, AZ | I had the windshield panel professionally painted as well as the grill and center console last Feb. Wish I had done powdercoating instead!! It looks GREAT compared to stock and the console still looks very good but it does NOT take the same beating that the grill and windshield panel do. From a distance the bike looks really good but get up close and the nicks in the black paint stick out like a sore thumb!!! If you are going to spend the money, spend the extra and do powdercoating. I sure wish I had!!! |

Nope not first for the bike.
Dealer did 500, 3500 using Victory Oil.
I'm doing 6K, 10K, 15K using Amsoil with Bosch filter. |

Nebraska | Lay bike on right side tip overs. Remove plug. Install washer. Do not over tighten plug. Maybe even use torque wrench. |
