Has anyone attended an ABATE rally? I'm seriously thinking of going down to Arkansas for the Spring Thaw Rally. Is it like the HOG rallies where you have to be a member to particapate? If so how much does it cost to become a member? I've been told they can get a little wild so those who have been please share your stories.

I had been to the ABATE Boogie 6 yrs in a row. It was a lot of fun. Bands, vendors, games, poker rides, and thousands of great people partying at their campsites. I went to the EasyRiders Rodeo in 2006 in Chillicothe, OH. I have not been back to the Boogie since. Nothing against the Boogie, it was very fun, but I only have time for one per year. It's the 30th anniversary of the Boogie so I might have to go back this year.

For the Boogie, you have to be a member of either ABATE or some state recognized motorcycle organization such as AMA. I'm not sure if the rules are different at other ABATE bike fests.
$40 for addmission, $35 for membership if required.

Abate membership varies by state but usually around $25-$35 a year. The Rallies are generally pretty tame with folks dancing, drinking and generally having a good time at a campground. Vendors, bands and of course several rides w/at least one poker run.
Someone mentioned ABATE seems to talk more than host rides and thats true. The organization is a MC advocate/lobbying group at the state level. They deal with issues such as helmet choice, MC exemptions on toll roads, stricter covered load laws and they even got PA to study the effects of tar snakes and materials used on MC safety. So even if you are not inclined to attend the political meetings, they could sure use your money and membership when pushing for better safety for bikers at the state.
In PA ABATE lobbied to have a couple dollars added to the license renewal of riders, it is like $3 every 5 years. The money goes into a fund which pays for MSF courses throughout PA. ANY person wishing to learn how to ride or wishing to attend the MSF course does so for FREE.

they are good for fighting for your rights. you just dont join them to do long distance rides and what not.. basically stuff like that.. at least thats how it is in the SW pa part of the state. i talked to one of the ladies in charge of the pittsburgh area chapter and she even said so.. she said hundreds of members. only 5 ever ride. BUT they will fight for your rights!!! One of my close friends is the VP of the fayette county ABATE he has been trying to get me to join for a while now.. I tell him ill pay for them to fight for my rights. he gets mad.. Ive said i didnt spend all this money to sit and talk about sticking it to the man.. Ill ride. and ill pay someone to fight my battles for me.. LOL (joking) btw he has 3000 miles in 7 years on his bike.. give you an idea of the RIDING they do..

I guess we'll have to pick up the slack mileage wise and they can pick up the slack keeping the Man aware of our rights. Sound like a good deal for $25-$35 a year.

For $25.00 to $35.00 a year for someone to go to the state and national legistature, and fight for your rights? And thats not a good deal? wait till they mandate seat belts, air bags, and roll cages. The dues money would be cheep!. Our district has meetings every month, and in the summer, these are riding meetings. we sponser about 3 rides a summer to raise money for some local cause. (just an excuse to ride). The State ABATE ralley is a mini Sturgis, Vendors, some riding, party, and of course, some of the other. Join your stste ABATE. The newspaper every month is worth it!

Many years ago I was instramental in bringing an abate chapter to my county. After a short time though I relized that a group that is "aiming towards education" was more interested in drinking then riding. Since then I have paid atention to the local reags, and found that you can always spot a abate function because there is always......

Not all states are run that way. North Dakota does not operate that way. and we are geared for saftey and education.

Been an ABATE member for 7 years. Every chapter in every state does things a little differently........as for riding vs drinking that tone is set by the chapter leadership. The chapter I'm in does a little of both. All in all ABATE is a good deal, you can be as active or passive as you want. If you don't like what your chapter is doing step up and volunteer. Like most good causes there are always more people criticizing than helping.
