I am a little embarrassed to ask this but I do believe that the only dumb question is the one not asked so here goes. I have been riding for years and logged tens of thousands of miles but I did it as a loner. I've worked for the Postal Service for nearly 20 years and not senior enough to have weekends off. Due to this and some other factors, I have never been to a rally, bike week, poker run, nor group ride. I never really thought that I would enjoy these events as I really enjoy doing my own thing. However, with my Vision purchase last week week, I have been giving thoughts on going to some Victory sponsored events. I mean what better way to get educated than by meeting some of you and other more experienced Visionaries? So how about telling me what the wife and I can expect if we make out? We are considering the Carlisle event in 3 weeks as our first. I'm sure that we'll take some ribbing for this post but we all had to start somewhere right?

...taz, like you, I'm a lone wolf rider and never have been to an event except a local group ride for new years, or a charity run, maybe a total of about 5 in the last 5 years. I'll say this, ride up and you're in! No need to be embarrassed or anything like that. Just make sure when you park though that the kickstand is DOWN! Hope you all enjoy and you will meet some great people!

Ive been to my first and last one. the entire time I was there I wished I was actually riding and camping on the Blue Ridge parkway, or enjoying riding my bike period. I didnt buy a bike to park it in front of a bar and sit around, but thats just me

I'm 90% a lone rider, but have been to several events. From 10 riders for a daytrip up to hundreds for a 3 day weekend/party.
My Observations:
They are generally kind of boring, so have things planned for yourself, or meet up with some bros for a ride, or attend the poker run. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_run
Night time is the best. Live music, burnout competitions. Just wander around and take in the sights.
Good place to buy 'stuff'. I like to visit the venders, two or three times.
Practice "Oh, that is nice honey, but there is no room on the bike"
Bikers are scary in the morning, but not in the good way. I like to catch the pancake breakfast and take a morning ride. Or hit the car wash. Just give everyone else time to wake up a bit.
Bring a weapon, but make it hard to get to. Most situations seem dangerous but defuse as quickly as they start. You don't want to overreact.
Don't get between gangs wearing colors, or cause problems for 'Prospects' looking to prove something.
As I am a morning person, I like a dog-day, afternoon nap.
Participate in the bike show and/or parade.
Learn group riding rules http://www.njmc.org/etiquette/

I have been to a few and went to AVR this year. The best time I had at a rally was a Gold Wing rally in Madison, WI. Well organized. Lots of vendors. Lots of seninars and rides. Big enough to command real decent room rates for the Hotels in the area. I am mostly a loner though and we enjoy our time alone on the road and travel at our own pace.
