Subject: Reversing the drive belt

I was talking with a Victory dealer about removing the rear wheel for a tire change and he mentioned that I needed to be sure to turn the drive belt around so that it runs in the opposite direction from what it was running to increase the belt life.

His point was that you are then running on the "unused" portion of the belt.

Is this a bunch of hokey or is it true ?

I'm an automotive tech and any procedure that involves removing the timing belt always cautions to mark the belt direction and reinstall it the same way if reusing it. Timing belts are basically the same type of belt.

Good call, SteveS. Vision tech manual states:

BELT REMOVAL
NOTE: If belt is to be reinstalled, always mark the
direction of rotation on the outer surface of belt. Reinstall
belt in same direction as it was removed.

I cannot see how it will increase belt life at all, it doesn't make it younger. I'd be a little leary of that tech.

The comment he made was you are using the back side of the "teeth" that were previously not in contact with the sprockets.

NO DON"T TURN THE BELT AROUND DON"T
The belt is all ready worn and stretched in one direction if you turn it around it will break on you. GUARANTEED
I have worked on harleys for more years then I can count and all the service books say make the belt for direction and and witch side is out.

I was an instructor at MMI for Harley-Davidson, also worked for both HD factory and Indian (Gilroy) factory.  The belts are DIRECTIONAL!  If you do what that "tech" tells you to do, you run the risk of belt failure.  In other words, up on the interstate, bike is running fine, you grab a hand-full to change lanes..... SNAP....  you are spinning your drive-pulley and the guy behind you has your belt around his neck or in his windshield.

The tech needs to monitor the wear of both the drive pulley and belt, recommend r&r to the customer when needed.

 Don't turn the belt over!

DO NOT DO THIS. I tried it as an experiment on a harley once because someone told me the same thing(I should have known better). The belt had 4 years, 56k on it and I was going to replace it any way. It broke, tore actually, 264 miles later. If you look at your belt and it isnt wearing evenly across the teeth, "somethin aint right"

by the way, you have a very good belt on this bike. I replaced my first belt at 45,000 miles and it looked brand new. I'm on the second belt with 42,000 miles on and I don't have any intentions to replace anytime soon even though my pulley is now worn and the belt has a wear pattern in it. If I knew what I know now I would would still be using the original belt. You don't need any voodoo for this belt.

On my harley Electra glide I broke me first ever belt at 88 thousand miles. For the most part the bike was always over the limit for weight and I road it hard. When I put on the new one the tech said it will stretch a 1/8 inch in the first 100 miles and thats it. Keep it clean he said and it will go 90 thousand miles. So for my vision I do less weight and ride it. I think its BS to change as much as they say. Belts are made of Kevlar and last a longer time then what Vic says.

^^^ I am sure that Vic doesn't want us on the side of the road with a broke belt. That is what I am telling myself.
