On the return trip of a lunch ride today my Vis started spittin',coughin',poppin', and backfiring! NOT GOOD. I limped down the road and finally got her to my dealership to have her checked out.
Turns out that the TPS and the throttle body are both shot. They'll have her for about 2 weeks (wait for parts, then wait for "the rest of the parts" to come in).
The only good part of this story is - IT'S ALL COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

luke my friend, it is good to hear that you have the warranty to cover this. It seems that the TPS and TB gave you the same symptom as my fuel pump blowing...

Yes I have had many things repaired with Extended warrenty well worth the money. Gas cap, Throttle Body controler Tank Badge and front forks rebuilt and the plate that the rear grab handels attach to.

Chris, I picked up on your subtle hint and talked to my tech and he is going to check out the fuel pump while he's got the Vis there.

I think my Vis may be the only '08 Vision that runs RICH. It has always "sooted up" the gunner tips since I put them on, way back in '07. He's going to set all specs to factory and see if he can make it run "right".

I was a richie until I fixed the blooming exhaust leak at the header and then that thing got HOT. My fuel pump cost me about $130 of troubleshooting, only for them to clear the ECU and retest. With no error codes, the next thing to check was the fuel pump pressure, which is a manual test. It was about half of what it should have been. The bugger sputted, and popped, and coughed when it went while I was running wide open on to one of the worse sections of I95 and the I85 interchange that share the on-ramp for I95N off of 460. Trucks bearing down and no place to pull off, I was able to finally get out of the way and limp home.

Just a guess, but suspect the fuel pump failing caused an excessive lean condition that stressed your header pipe forcing it to crack.

I had a fuel pump fail on my kingpin and the bike popped loudly, ran awful, very hot, and caused clutch slippage.

Well, I checked with my dealer to see when I could get the Vis back. As it turns out, my suggestion about checking the fuel pump WAS A GOOD IDEA. Yes, it is bad but now I'm waiting for parts to come AGAIN :-(

Good to hear they caught while it was there, not while you were excelerating into heavy traffic.

Hey, fellow '08, '09 Vision riders, have your pump pressure checked. It's made by the Harley plant in China... well, maybe not the Harley plant, but it is "made in china".

Hey cool hand, I was wondering do you frequently let your gas tank get all the way on E?

Yes, actually I've let it get WAY down to where I wasn't sure I'd get to a station before running all the way out. These were on my longer trips away from my home town of Jacksonville where it took all of 5 1/2 gallons to get back home (aprx 200 miles). I hopefully will be getting better mileage now with all the new parts. Only time will tell.

DOES ANYONE THINK THAT THERE IS A CORRELATION OF FUEL PUMP FAILURE DUE TO RUNNING THE TANK THE ALMOST EMPTY????

Luke, I've got my old pump as a trophy. I want to take a closer look at it, but my experienced tech said it sounded like it was cavatating, as if the little plunger rubber was blown. That would have to be a material issue as mine does not get down to E for long. Use would be more the culprit and wearing out the rubber, more than running the tank low, unless someone can 'splain it better...

Never let your tank get that low. When you hit a 1/4 get gas.
My car pump went out and when I picked it up I ask why. His first statement was 9 out of 10 times people let the tank get to low and it cause the pump to heat up. Second response was to much ethanol gas. He said ethanol can and will eat gaskets in the pump.
It only coast me a 1000 dollars to learn my lesson

That kills me to hear that John. Right or wrong, I can't believe that would be the case that a car or motorcycle manufacturer would build a device to fail under such normal circumstances. Not agreeing or disagreeing, but if true, it sounds that they build it to fail and then point the finger at the user who most likely would do that.

I got the Vis back yesterday evening. Runs like it is new !!!!!!!!!
1. Vision TPS and throttle-body "shot" and fuel pump only puttin' out 1/2 of the PSI it shoulda been.
2. Vision at dealership from 04/13 to 04/29
3. Parts replaced = TPS, throttle body, and fuel pump
4. Cost (to me) = $0.00 That's NADA,ZIP,NOTHING !!! Thank the Lord I bought the Extended Warranty back in '07 when I got her.

Keep in mind that a occasional running the tank very low is ok more then likely but every time you do it there is a melting or over wearing of something.

Great your up and going. Now that you have a new horsepower bike you can go like the wind.
