Greetings all. New to this forum after someone on the VOGnet told me about it. I'm now riding a red 2011 Vision after trading up from an '09 Jackpot. The JP was great but I need to cover distances more comfortably.

The bike is great; I have about 1,000 miles on her, and have only one real concern which was addressed on the VOG site (maybe here too but not recently that I can see), and that is random engine stalling. It has happened to me twice already, once after pulling in the clutch as I approached a stop, and another time while decelerating in gear. Both times she fired right back up, but I was a little spooked. If that happens at the wrong moment it could be a big problem.

Anyway any insight would be appreciated - so far I am still pretty stoked to be a Vision owner. This is one badass machine.

Welcome aboard! I also have a 2011 Vision with over 4k miles on her since May, and I have yet to experience any stalls. Did you notice anything weird when it happened? (Besides the stall of course)

Welcome aboard and I'm sure you'll enjoy the many (s)miles you'll get out of your Vision.  I'm also a recent convert from a 2008 Jackpot and loving it !!!

As for your issue, are you "blipping" the throttle?  If so... then that would be part of your problem as these newer bikes tend to not like that.  It's been discussed many times .... some say it's the cause of the stall (also fouling plugs) and others have not had a single issue while doing it.   Just a thought.

Also... you say you heard about this forum from The Vog ... are you aware of the VMC.  Plenty of info there as well.

I have experienced the same stall in the exact same scenerieo on my 2010. Called 2 different dealers and no one seems to know anything about a problem.

"Blipping" or "goosing" the throttle can cause the problem. The computer doesn't 'understand' the intention. It could also be something as simple as the computer still 'learning' your environment and driving habits. The two scenarios you described are different, it may have 'learned' them. Myself, I wouldn't be concerned until the same scenario repeats at least three time. See what happens, it's still a baby.

OK let me get the terminology straight - when I downshift, I rev the engine a little to match RPMs with the lower gear. I've always done this on all motorcycles, and stickshift cars. Is this what folks are calling "blipping"? If so, then when you're downshifting, is one supposed to simply let out the clutch slowly and get some engine braking action? Thanks.

You shouldn't have to rev your engine while downshifting as our bikes have slipper clutches. The slipper keeps you from locking up the rear wheel while downshifting which is why most people use to rev the engine a little to match the rpms of the downshift.

It does take getting used to when you have alway ridden bikes with carbs, let your RPMs drop to around 2K or lower before downshifting and it is fine. If it continues and the dealer isn't helping, try to PM kevinX or Rylan on the VMC they may be able to offer some advice to help you narrow it down.

You'll get that stall sometimes and not be doing anything out of the ordinary, it does on my '08. Mine had a serious issue with stalling that everyone seemed to say wasn't there. I had some really close situations because of it. Eventually I found that I had exhaust leaks from the factory because of the malformed header pipes and the poorly made Victory gaskets, they're too hard. The dealer kept reflashing saying that was the problem. But when I replaced the gaskets and smoothed out the mating surface on the pipes, the popping and stalling dropped to almost nil. I say almost nil, because it will stall sometimes in stop and go traffic, or after hard riding on the interstate into city driving.

Blipping is that constant rapping of the throttle, not associated with anything else, doing what you are doing doesn't sound like blipping, but could cause the stall if you crack the throttle heavy to "match" the rpms. I'm trying to picture what you are doing because when I down shift I'm well within the rpm range for that gear, so I just roll the throttle into the rpm to match the speed when I shift. The blipping thing will confuse the computer and make it do things not consistant in what is going in your mind. It's like driving your car, you don't sit and rev your motor, or blip the throttle sitting at a light, so why should you on your motorcycle.

If anything I would have the dealer put it on the machine and reflash your fuel management to make sure you are where it needs to be, or get one of those power commander thingys and do it yourself if you are aptly inclined.

Mine did that the morning I picked her up from the dealer, I wasn't 2 miles down the road and pulling ia gas station to top her off. I thought "WTF" However 1 1/2 years later and it has only done it once more. These engines do not like to be blipped though.............

The only time my bike has ever stalled on me was if the battery cables were loose. Fuel injected bikes need constant power or they reset each time they lose power.

My '08 has had this problem since it was new (30K mi.) Its been reflashed, I have tried all kinds of riding styles, nothing has made a difference. As to the "slipper clutch" comment, not so much! My rear wheel skidded in second gear at 20 mph (riding two up) when I engaged the clutch trying to restart the engine. Very spooky!!

I don't know what others may have gotten away with but you never want to dump the clutch to get your bike to refire. I don't know if it is a V-Twin thing, or electronic fuel/ignition set up. Savage, you know, but I'm sharing so other won't try that, ever on these bikes.
