Ok here's the story

Out on ride today, 2 bikes, driving a little in excess of the posted limit.
Riding in typical formation.
2nd bike notices police car going same direction as bikes and slows and pulls into the right hand lane behind another car

1st bike almost passes police car.

1/2 mile ahead 1st p/c pulls to right and nearly stops where a second p/c is parked in the meridian.

As we pass both both now stopped cars they pull out on hwy and each stop one of us separatly.

We both get identical tickets, both at same speed, both as being clocked by radar.

My question is this.

One- would it be possible for a rear mounted car radar unit to catch two motorcycles?

two- If another unit were parked on the side of the road (undected) would it be possible to by hand held unit to clock two motorcycles riding in formation? (clock one and read it and clock the 2nd before they are past the radar unit)

I plan on going to court to fight it. In my opinion I beleive they only caught one of us and not both! Thanks in advance for any info.

See if the same radar or laser was used for both of you. Some states have a place on the ticket where the officer enters the serial number of the radar gun used.

A radar isn't the only way an officer can ticket you though. It's possible that you can be ticketed in a formation with just one of the bikes tagged by radar or laser. As long as the officer is willing to testify that he observed one or more bikes moving from point A to point B maintaining the same relative position to the bike that was tagged.....I suppose the judge could go either way, depending on what you said, or how you said it.

A favorite tactic here in San Antonio is to have an officer standing on an overpass, tagging vehicles. The officer then radios the description to officers on the road who pull you over, write you up, get you on your way, and stop the next one. I've seen people pulled over well past a mile from the overpass.

Take your lumps - ain't worth the effort. Prick got me in an American Indian reserve this summer - 1st pop in 35 years. Move on and don't change nuthin. Life's TOO short. And I speed ALL the time - safest dang thing you can do - keep away (ahead) of the guys who WILL kill you if you don't keep in front. Most Cops know that - and I have driven past them - often. It's just the ignorant asshole guys who do what your guy did. He will learn - tell him nicely....

Yup......... I think, if the cop shows, you may have a hard time fighting it like cchristo stated. In formation, if they get one...they'll get everyone.

My LC Pres and I were running at 10 over one day.... just crossed area of town that the speed dropped, I didn't know this until it was to late. Out of NOWHERE, two police cars show up with lights a blazin'. I slide over a bit to let 'em pass and one pulls in behind me and the other behind him. I was caught off gaurd...then a split second later an unmarked pulls beside me and tells me to pull it over. Okay...I thought. Both officers got out, took paperwork, came back with tickets. Come to discover that we were not tagged with radar, but by following us in the unmarked. After ticket, they all pulled away and less than a mile down the road....more pulled over. Was a total speed trap zone that day.

Long story shortened, Pres took defensive driving and I went to court to fight it since officer that wrote me the ticket wasn't the one that "tagged" me via the unmarked. After a few reschedules, because one or the other wasn't available....finally got to a piont where only the ticketing officer was present. Since the other wasn't present to testify on my speed and how it was derived - court threw it out. Got lucky, yeah, but I was pissed enough to go through the hassle.

Total, cost me $100 and a few mornings in court ...but overall much cheaper then taking alternatives (admitting guilt or the defensive driving).

Get a lawyer if you really want to fight it. But you will probably spend more than the ticket. However, there are attorney groups here in FL that fight tickets and pretty much guarantee you'll get off for a small fee, usually less than $500. Things to check on. Was the serial number placed of the device used to clock you placed on the ticket? When was it last calibrated for accuracy. If it wasn't calibrated that morning it can be argued that it can't be certified as accurate. Just one thing that might get you off. There are more.
