I purchased a shop manual on cd-rom for 40 dollars. Seriously, the first 500 mile maintenance is an oil and filter change, lube the brake and clutch cable and a road test. It also includes looking at several other things but it doesn't take long to give these other checks the once over. If you don't ride in severe conditions then more than likely everthing else should check out OK. If your not well apt at working on things by all means have a dealer do it. Im just saying if your paying more than a 100 dollars your getting ripped off. If your bike needs more work than that I would think it would be coverd under the warranty. For those of you who like to do your own work I suggest you get the shop manual. Worth every penny and will save you a lot in the long run.

500 Miles service is covered by my local dealer. The only added cost is the price of oil and filter. Bike is always kept uder cover while at dealer. No complaints here... 300+ for the first service??? Ouch...

Just had my 500 mile service done at Napalm Motorsports in Austin Texas and total came to $194. Two hours labor at $70/hr and oil and filter. Not looking forward to expenses for future checkups.

From past experience with motorcycle and car dealerships, my guess is if you ask what the std. shop labor rate is per hour, then ask what the book hours for the maintenance or repair, that is what you are going to pay. Where you have to be careful is when the department double dips. For example: you have service that requires removal of the rear wheel. While they have the wheel off you ask to change the tire.
The original repair that requires rear wheel removal is book rate of 3.5 hours. if you wanted just the rear tire replaced. Book rate is 2.5 hours. Then you look at the bill with 6 hours labor. Do the math they double dipped on you. Not all dealers do this, however some do.

Dealer performed 500 mile service at no charge at all. Also, don't lube the cables, my Shop manual says they are teflon coated on inside and not meant to be lubed. I guess the CD could say something different than my paper book, but Pretty sure they are coated. Have heard it from dealer also.
