This is more of a product review. A little over 6,000 miles ago I went to AMSOIL 0W40 and was immediately impressed that the morning tick is all but gone. I had planned on changing the oil at 5,000 but decided to push it a little further since I'm not getting the usual end of life rattle. With Vic oil would occur around the 2,500 mile mark, and AMSOIL 10w40 and Rotella 5W40 would come a little later around 3,000 to 3,500 mile mark. I've been going to the 5,000 mile mark the last 3 or 4 oil changes. I am impressed and curious as to why the 0W40 is not giving in to the "time to change oil" rattle.

This may also prove once again you can not kill an oil thread....

You should take a sample over to napa and have them analyze your oil to see what they have to say.

I would never do it or tell any one to do it but I believe Amsoil is good for 16 thousand miles in cars. I do know that Amsoil has a additive in it so the oil looks as clean as the day you put it inn never looks dirty. Cars now days are doing 6 thousand miles between changes.

i used to go 7500 miles in my 125 cubic inch kawasaki. and that was with a blackstonelabs oil test. i am using amsoil now but i am still following the 2500 oci ONLY because victory requires receipts and records of your oil changes (according to my 2008 owners manual and Extended warranty) so once my warranty is up i will do the 5000 oci, i already know someone with a vision going 5000 oci with Mobil1 mc oil and his oil tests have come back Great!

Know that it doesn't apply to you CapN, but FYI I saw a recent AMSOIL add claiming that they have an additive that makes it good for winter storage.

I think overall, and it is something we don't really discuss, is the nickel lined cyclinders and the quality bearings the Freedom motor has that really makes any oil good for Victory. I would like to do the oil sample this time to see what the reading is, as the bike still runs quiet with 6,000 miles on the oil. I'll change it soon, but with summer here I thought of going back to rotella 5w40 but if there is something secret about the 0w40 about keeping the motor quiet, I'll stay with it. It's avertised as a sports vehicle oil, like ATV's quads, dirt bikes, but with a JASO of MA I thought it would be good to use in the Vision. If Amsoil preserves so well, I might just start putting it on my cereal in the morning...

Here is a oil link. Now keep in mind he talks about cars but the same principal apply's to motorcycle. Its rather wordy but you do leave with a better understanding about oil. What I did understand is why lighter oil might be better then heavy oil.

Oil change time! So I call my local NAPA. They got no Castrol semi-syn blend oil. Neither does Schmucks/O'Reilly. They're clearly not "looking out for me." Neither carries Amsoil, either. WTF?? I go online and all I get is info filling out pages to tell me where I can order the stuff. Here I sit in a major metropolitan area, putting up with tons of traffic, red light frikkin' cameras, and all sorts of commie BS and I can't go down and buy a few quarts of stinkin' oil when I want? I could live in the boonies fer Chrissakes if I gotta order everything anyway. Can you tell I'm mildy unamused?? Now I gotta go 35 miles to Bremerton and pay $8 a quart for the original stuff. What a pain in the ass.

My Harley riding buddy just bought a 2012 Chrysler 200 and he said that oil changes are recommended to be every 8000 miles. I don't know whether the oil is better or vehicles are better st keeping the oil cleaner.

Rainryder, I don't use Amsoil for that reason. I have to drive all over to get it. Advance Auto is a half mile from my house and they carry MC oil and the Fram PH7317 filter I use. I buy a pack of 10 copper drain plug washers when I'm at the dealer and they last me a couple of years.

I went to the local Auto Zone and Advance Auto parts store the other day..I wanted a qt.of Motorcraft 5W-20W for my old Taurus...$5.89 at one and $5.97 at other..$3.97 at the local Miejer's...Motorcycle oil prices at most auto supply stores are, also, way to high...You can buy the same stuff, generally,at Wal-Mart or Miejer's a whole lot cheaper..$17.00 for wiper blades at auto parts store, $12.00 at Miejer's.....Not sure about Amsoil prices as I have never used it, but those that have seem to swear by it.......Maybe next time I change oil......

One thing to consider is that you are changing the oil filter a LOT LESS than the manufacturer recommends.

I have a 08 and run 10w40 Amsiol motorcycle oil and change it at 5000 miles. No I don't have any funny noise at 2500 or hard shifting. Ask a oil professional about the bike shifting hard at 2500 or noise and he will sell you a bridge and maybe some aspirin for your head. My lawn more gets a fresh oil in the spring and I run it wide open all summer and after fifteen years it still runs strong. So how does a little motor take the pounding and a bike doesn't. Don't answer I don't care what you say.
I use a wix oil filter. Guess after 25000 bike bike runs like new and I'm just a dumb shit.

Just curious, have you noticed any difference on the clutch performance? Does it feel the same?

I have had no problems whats so ever. I do wounder about the guys that say they have slippage and go back to vic oil and all is good when in all reality the clutch plates are still full of the synthetic oil.
Hey you do a search all clutch manufactures use material that works with synthetic oils. Now I know you can't keep switching cause yes your clutch will go away. I switch to Amsoil when the bike had 9000 miles on it. I do race the Harley's when ever they want a ass whooping and do just fine.

I use a 20W/50..but use a semi-syn in winter months...full syn in summer months...but thinking that I will settle on

Speaking for the Cap'n, he's not noticed any slippage up until about 10,000 miles ago and switched back to maVic oil.  So far the performance has been good back with the mother juice, but the annoying tic is there, just not as pronounced when there was less miles on the motor.  He might try the T5 silver jug of rotella to see how that fairs at the next oil change.
