Since there isn't much in the owners manual about the trunk light switch.

There are 3 positions for the switch and only one position turns the light on and assuming the other setting is OFF,

What is the center setting for?

On mine the light stays off.

I know one of the positions makes the light turn off when the lid is closed. I'm always fearful that somehow or another it'll come on, or not get the lid closed and drain the battery when the bike is in the garage.

1 setting is always off 1 is for on when you open the trunk and the other is always on.

you can find out what they are but pressing the BUTTON that pushes shut when you close the lid. that will give you an idea what the positions do.

Mine is: on when open, off and off.... brand new bike! My 09 was the same. I always leave it off until I need it.

On my 09 there is no button to activate the trunck light.  I have looked everywhere so I guess it is on, OFF and OFF.

How about a picture of this illusive button?

yeah...parked my bike at in the parking ramp at Trump Towers in Atlantic City last July. I came back 2 days later at 5:00 in the morning to leave and the battery was stone cold dead. I got a jump from security and the trunk light came right on. Only time its ever happened to me bu I guess we bumped the switch unloading. Damn that pissed me off!!
