I am looking for ideas on ways to carry a collapsable portable wheelchair. My wife's knees are deteriorating and it is impacting her ability to due any extended walking. I bought her a travel/collapsable wheelchair. The chair itself has 8" wheels and it collapses down to a 30" x 30 " 10" with a weight of 20#.
I have a Vision with a rack on it. I am hoping to get your input on what you think the best way to transport the chair is.
As alway, I greatly appreciate your help and input. |

Central Illinois | Dan, that is designed for a motorized wheel chair weighing hundreds of pounds. I think he is talking about a simple one you push around. So far this is something I have not had to address so I really can't help much. The way my wife's knees are going it won't be long for me so I look forward to seeing an answer. |

| How about a hitch mounted bicycle rack? I saw a pciure of a guy carrying his bicycle on a vision. I'll bet it would work for the wheel chair. |

The bicycle rack idea might have merit, as a "load extender".
I'm envisioning a rack that would go into a trailer hitch. It would extend upwards to the level of the trunk rack. It would have a crossbar wide enough to hold the wheelchair, which would be laid flat across the trunk and onto the cross-piece, bridging the two. It would be light and simple. A couple of straps from the trunk rack to the "load extender" would hold the wheelchair on.

Hitch doc has a small foot print carrier that might work. It supports 35 lbs. |

The concept isn't original. Have you ever seen those "load extenders" that people use on pickup trucks to carry long, but not overly heavy, loads in their pickups? It goes into the receiver hitch, extends rearward, then has an upright with a crossbar to hold the end of the load. It's a simple "L" frame with a "T" on top for the load to rest on.
Something like this, only on a smaller scale, and it would be tucked in much closer to the bike of course. http://www.amazon.com/Extend-A-Truck-944-Truck-Bed-Extender/dp/B000...
You'll need a receiver type trailer hitch on your bike if you want to make it easily removable.

| About 15 years ago a '99 V92C owner wanted the same idea for his wife. My brain is old so i don't remember the details but maybe you could search TheVMC.com archives for info. I think they give a 30 day guest pass to the site. It seems he had a sidecar but maybe his rack could work on the Vision?

Back around 2001, a fellow at Sturgis was in a wheelchair. He had an HD with what you might call a sidecar. His wheelchair looked into the platform and all of the controls were a hydraulic setup for use from the platform as he sat in his wheelchair. There are a lot of great minds out there that should be able to help you out. Maybe a search of motorcycles+wheelchairs+racks?

I've searched on the string you suggested. At this point, its apparent that I need to install a trailer hitch. I like Ronnie's idea with extender that would align with my trunk rack. Very small profile and not intrusive. I could mount a small platform but knowing me, at some point I may forget its there and accidentally back up too far  |

Piney Flats, TN United States | I bought a hitch mount single bicycle carrier that slides into a 2" receiver. It comes with tie down straps. I use it to haul a portable walker with basket and fold down seat. Rode from Tenn. to DC and back with no problem. I even strapped an umbrella to the carrier with bungee cords. A portable wheelchair and portable walker weigh about the same. |

My concern would be that you need to add lights since the wheelchair might cover your up. If you have a trailer light connector, you could use it to fashion lights on the back of the rack.

New Bohemia, VA | you may not want to, but what comes to my mind is pull the trunk and go with a passenger backrest. From there, fabricate something that will extend behind the back rest, but keep the wheelchair above the taillights. Removing the trunk would reduce the rear weight with the added wheelchair. This may allow you to also add a travel bag to carry what you need in.
