Anyone know how the trunk light switch works? There seems to be three position. One on far end of the switch closest to the rear that the plunger activates when you open the lid. My question is which of the other detents is off and what does the third switch detention do?

The middle position does nothing. You have off or on. If you leave it in the on position, the plunger will shut it off when the trunk closes. I actually had to take it apart to verify that.
I thought it would be like a dome light with off, auto, and on.

I suppose on all the time would be superfluous, unless you wanted to the trunk to be an easy bake oven.

Bumble is correct. I had to replace mine and had it apart. It may have had another application where one position was on regardless of plunger position like a car. Not possible on our bike since there is no constant power lead to the light.

All the way to the rear = off all the time. All the way toward the front = on all the time. Middle position = off when closed. I may be wrong on the front and middle, as I leave mine turned completely off all the time until I need it. Then I go full-forward to light it up and switch it back off before closing. I don't trust the on/off plunger to shut it off because I don't want to run my battery down.

Note: Front and rear are relative! When I said rear, I meant toward the rear of the trunk as I face it; closest to the seat back. Front means toward me as I open the trunk.
