I spent 10 years working in the "coatings industry"; I can tell you from personal experience that aluminum is one of the most difficult surfaces there is to coat/paint/print and achieve adequate adhesion and a durable finish.

The process for cleaning, and priming is multi-step and involves a couple of different etching chemicals, flushing with water to remove the chemicals, drying and priming must occur within a very small time window to prevent oxidation from occurring.

If the parts were not pre-treated properly then primed with a primer/bonder then it is likely that you have very limited adhesion.

A quick test that you can perform yourself (since the part is already ruined) is a cross hatch tape test.

Using an xacto knife cut through the surface of the paint in perpendicular lines about 1/16 of an inch apart. (Like a tic tac toe game ) this will create a whole bunch of little 1/16 of an inch squares in the paint. Take standard transparent tape and apply it to the cut area and rub it down (leave enough tape free on the end to grab) and then yank it off.

If the coating has proper adhesion the only color that should come off attached to the tape will be in the form of a mirror image of the knife cuts. If you remove any of the little squares that you have created by making the cuts then you have an adhesion failure.

I am not defending anybody, and if you have paid attention you will have noted that I call a spade a spade all the time. I do not defend stupid people. That said it is plainly visible that the paint did not bond correctly to the surface, and thus it would not take mach at all to make the paint come off. Bring it by the guy that painted it in the first place, and I'll bet he agrees. Yes it may have been caused by the mechanic, but looking at it I would say that it was only a matter of time before it happened You have also made it abundently clear that you do your own work, and your dealer made only the money of the sale off of you. That would make it hard for him to justify giving you $200 worth of Victory paint to repair a quarter sized spot. If you were in the same position what would you do?? I also read that he offered to have it fixed at a shop of his choice, or to split the cost of the paint. Either of those were reasonable options and would have resulted in a repaired bike for no small expense to the dealer.

Paint must have really made a jump in price if it is $200 now!!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the feeling you do not like anybody working on Victory bikes besides techs.  From cars, trucks, and tractors, I have never went back to the dealer for service.  Much cheaper this way, and you know exactly what was done.

He did offer to have a shop there fix it, but I am not leaving my bike there with him as he wanted!!  He eyeballed it very close and never once did he mention bad adhesive.

To others:  I appreciate the responses.

Again if you read my posts you will find that you are dead wrong. I think it is great that people work on their own stuff. As long as they do a competant job, and do not blame their mistakes on the bike. Now before you say it. I am not insinuating that you made a mistake.
As to the price on the paint I based that on my past expieriance for the primer, base, and clear coats

BULLETIN !!! This JUST IN !!!
An E-Mail from VICTORY today has a Screaming Headline: Victory Motorcycles Has 95% Ownership Satisfaction

I recently filled in a Questionaire from Victory about this and sent it in. The results are in from hundreds of Victory owners - 95% Happy.

Details on the poll can be found on the Polaris/Victory web site

And yes - I believe their results - based on my dealer and my experiences with them.

RedDog and Kevinx, time to take it offline.

Without getting in the middle I would highly suggest as Kevenx suggested, taking it to the shop that painted it and show them. One of two things will result. They will either agree that it was mishandled, be able to fix it nicely and provide you with a bill that you can than proceed to other channels with. They may even support your efforts and give you 30 to 60 days. An invoice from a pro paintshop is a useful item. The other option is that as it looks in the picture, there was a flaw in the sealer. It happens. It's not anyone's fault really. It can be caused by everything from an inopportune breeze to a little no-see-em that flys in, to a bubble, to a minor imperfection on the part.. the list goes on... It happens all the time.

Bottom line... You'll get it fixed, you'll get a real quote, you may or may not have to pay for it. None of this will change arguing with Kevin, the tech that may have caused the problem, or anyone else.

You are all very lucky to have good dealers. I am very jealous of you guys. Yeah but i have a problem with surveys conducted by the company who is selling the product and also doing the survey. Obviously there not going to put in the bullshit that alot of us put up with. Once again, I LOVE there bikes, i just HATE there dealer network in the MI. area.
