http://www.wwmt.com/articles/roads-1363526-mich-counties.html interesting article about Michigan reverting to gravel roads to save money in these lean times. Living in Virginia gravel roads can be common place is some places and are not readily identifable on the online maps.
I have had a couple of occasions going down unknown twistie roads and hit gravel, what a surprise especially when they don't mark until you are at it and its beyond a hill or curve  |

Linwood, MI | There's a lot of roads in MI where reverting to gravel is actually an improvement. We've got potholes just about big enough to swallow a bike. I've lived up here for 20 years and it's always been the same; crappiest roads of any state I've ever lived in. And for as much work as they seem to be constantly doing to them (there's only 2 seasons in MI: Winter and Road Construction...) you'd think we'd have the best roads around.
Last year they decided to fix the potholes in town by using some sort of new spray-in really fine gravel stuff. It filled in the holes pretty good, I guess, but it left nice stretches of fine, loose gravel at a lot of intersections that nearly killed us bikers trying to make turns. I got nailed turning off my street onto a main road. I was down before I even realized I was down. Thank the Vic Engineers for the Tip-over-protection. All I got was a scraped knee and some scuffed t-o-ps. |
