Not and I mean, 'Not' to start an oil thread, but if I was to use matched weight oil, and used 3.5 qts syn oil, and 1 qt dino oil, on my next change, what would that do? Or would that not be a good idea? Brands don't matter, just wondering about mixing syn with dino oil. Please take it easy on me, it was just a thought.

Ok...for the why...it seems that straight syn oil seems to cause clutch issues, so I thought, why not use about 2/3rd syn oil and 1 qt dino oil. Sort of a homemade semi syn oil......ok so it sounded better in my head...

it would do NOTHING.. if you read all the oil makers website they all say their oil is safe to be added with somthing else. at the most all it will do is weaken the premium oils mixture. Not break it down. i know this is not what your talking about BUT i do this all the time.. i buy 3 qts of 20w50 and 2 of 10w40 i "mix" them . it provides a stronger w40 not a w50 and there is not such thing as a w45 . i do it for shear strength. Which i have also sent in my used oil samples to blackstone labs many times and they say my mixture works. Ive done this with amsoil in the past. I just recently have done this with mobil1. you might ask why not just go ALL w50. i live up north and i dont go straight 20w50 before of cold (dry) starts. but to asnwer your question.. it will NOT hurt you bike. need more prove, go to any oil makers website and read the FAQ section

iluvink I think the theory is good, and I respect your thinking to accomplish what you think you might accomplish. However, my innerself says, "don't do it". This is only based off the fact that both go through a seperate refinery process and then additives are mixed in seperately and so on. I was always taught that it is okay to put anything slick in your engine if you were in need to bring up the oil level to get to a location you could fix the leaking problem and change the oil and filter. Other than that, it should all be the same oil, as those additives in each may work against each other causing a bigger problem. The outerself says "Go ahead iluvink, I want to see what will happen in the long run because it might not be a bad idea afterall."

if the additives were to work against each other then that means when you change your oil from BRAND A to BRAND B you would be in trouble as there is more than 1/2 a qt left behind when you drain your oil out.. If the oil has the "Seal" on the bottle it has to meet a certain spec. now if you are using some kinda slick 50 type thing or what not, then thats another story.. but one oil will NOT cause damage to your engine because another brand was used in it.. thats just all the reason for that brand that caused to the problem to have decreased sales and possible law suit.

At best, mine assessment is an old wives tale, having worked at a gas station growing and my dad being in construction using oil by the gallons it seemed it was always recommended to use the same oil. I really never have given it any further thought until today when iluvink brought it up. I think there is a lot of misconceptions around doing this, and really I've never heard of one motor ever blowing up because oil was mixed. I was typing my response Ark as you posting yours and found that your post makes perfect sense. With all that said, habits and wives tales will rule yet another full blown oil thread.

from the MOBIL1 link you pointed out, maybe I'm not that far off of a substantiated theory....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, we would not recommend mixing oils as a general practice because oils are complex mixtures of additives and base oils that can be destabilized.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my previous comment: Other than that, it should all be the same oil, as those additives in each may work against each other causing a bigger problem.

The gas station I worked at in the '70's was a Mobil station and I was a Mobil1 pusher.... so I did learn a little from all the stuff I had to read up on...

Do I scratch my arse or my head on this thread?
If you read your owners manual it says you can add a comparable oil if you are low. So this means if you are out in east bumf$%k Egypt and for some strange reason you were low on oil you could add whatever comparable oil is available. If your bike has Victory semi-syn and you add full dino no big deal. Of course Mobil 1 comes from a dino base so the point is mute?
Don't use oil that has the additives like Teflon in it because of the wet clutch. I would bet putting straight 30W non-detergent wouldn't hurt if your in a pinch. You folks do know what non-detergent oil is?
Nothing to see here, move along....

I know a guy that mixes automatic transmission fluid with his gasoline. He claims it cleans the injectors. ???

because dino oil and syn alone didn't create enough oil debates....

semi synth isnt as simple as dino (regular) oil and full synth.. i would only add a dino oil to a synth oil only if i "had" too, like if you were on a trip or what not. but even in them cases you can buy mobil1 motorcycle oil just about anywhere.. even Walmart.. the main reason they dont want you mixing is because it weakens the most expensive oil you purchased in the first place.. Would I mix reg and full synth. No.. because i wouldnt want to spend $XX a qt only to weaken the mixture. the additives inthe full synth are alot more robust! more cleaners, anti wear additives etc. it wont hurt anything. it just wont be the full strength protection.. i personally dont like semi synth.. from the reviews and tests on oil forums, its not worth the money. doesnt mean the oil is bad.. just not worth the price tag. and regular dino oil is Good as well. but in these HOT engines i perfer to use a Fully Synth oil. if you go to mobil1 under the 20w50 they give a few reasons as to why someone should use fully synth oil in Air/oil cooled engines. I know on the oil forums i go to the air cooled engines really wear a Oil down quicker than lets say a 4 cyl h20 cooled motorcycle engine. Our bikes rely on the cooling fins of the cylinders and the OIL to cool the engine. So our oil does more than just lub the engine. it also takes on the job of Cooling it as well (oil cooler down by battery). Im not saying to use brand X. im just mentioning the job the oil has in our Victory's .. Alot of great oils out there..

Best way to check your SSG for clutch slippage. Ride all the way to Pine Bush, NY. Stay in a nice hotel overnight, get a good supper. sleep tight. Get up early, go to Lloydz have him CamIZE your SSG, then have him put on Dyno and watch him wack open the throttle in 5th, about 6 times...watch with amazement, Oh Man, that's your baby up there ripp'n ass, smok'n, and there is black smoke, lots. But No clutch slippage, your happy, 110 hp, smile a lot, give Lloydz $,$$$, go home, brag to your HD buddies, tell them to be very afraid...then go find your Gold Wing buddy!!! Oh life is great no clutch slippage.

At this point it's nothing more than an Idea. If you like experimenting with a $25,000 motorcycle just to prove uh............ something, feel free. It's your bike, your money. Fill us in on the long term results. The oil and engine experts have been doing this for decades. I'll take their word for it.

I guess it all depends on what is important to you. I just use the factory oil and enjoy the ride... After all it's all about the ride to me and after 2 years on my Vision it is not any worse for the wear. It still runs like new...

You know, if you Google, "mixing synthetic and regular oil" you get a boat-load of sites and discussions. Wow, this is really a point of discussion elsewhere. Some say 'ok', others say 'no way'. Hmm...
