The wife and I will be going to the New England States the end of June. Starting with Niagara Falls, Riding through Canada, back into NY, VT, to Portland ME. Just want to hit Portland because I've been to Portland OR. Also we want to hit Plymouth Rock and hit all of the NE states. Other than that I would like to know the most important thing about vacation--"where to eat". We would like to stay away from the normal chain type places but any advise will be welcome.

If you like seafood there is no shortage of good restaurants along the coast of Maine.

Lots of great clam shacks in Maine. Plus you need to ride the Maine and New Hampshire mountains.
Let me know when you are coming, need to ride the Kancamagus Highway, Mount Washington Auto Road,
plus the best homemade bread sandwich I ever ate was in Greeneville, Maine.

It would be a real shame to miss out on Acadia National Park while in Maine. It is one of the most beautiful places in North America and is only a couple of hours north of Portland outside of Bar Harbor.

I also can highly recommend finding a way from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia (it was the Bluenose ferry when I did it but it looks like they have closed that route now) and the ride up the Bay of Fundy.

There you can see one of the most amazing sights you will ever see when the tide changes. More water moves in and out of the bay in a tide cycle than than flows in all the freshwater rivers in the world.

That my friend is food for the soul!

Our route takes us right through Acadia, really looking forward to it. After Portland it's south bound due to time. What color is the bmw mine is red with toaster tank, '73 long wheel base?

White '72 SWB Toaster. Light mods - r90s bars, 32 mm Round-slide Mikuni carbs , Corbin gunfighter seat and Hepco Becker bags.

If you're still running the Bing CV carbs you wont believe how much better the throttle response is with the Mikunis. Which I bought pre-jetted from Rocky Point Cycles.

When the speedo quit working, I had Palo Alto Speedometer rebuild it with the correct original mileage and an arctic white face, so thats not original either but is way easier to read at night .

I had a serious (and inexcusable) brain fart and I put synthetic oil in it on the last oil change now all the seals are leaking and the rings are glazed so its smoking. It only took about 25 miles for that to happen. This may be the only BMW airhead in the world that marks its parking space.

Next month I'm pulling engine for a rebuild so I'm debating internally how far to go with the project.

Have fun, we just came back from the area. I love new england. Bar harbor is great. If you are not into 5 star accomadations we usually stay in Robbins Motel. If you need to get off the bike you can access free bus service into downtown and even Acadia from accross the street. We also stayed in Waldoboro, ME in Moodys Cabins. They gave us directions to a seafood place about a half and hour away that was great. Trenton Bridge Lobster pound is right outside Bar Harbor.
In upstate NH we usually stay in Gorhan NH. A lot of great motels we just stayed at the Top Notch Motel in Goeham and I would recommend it. Nice pool and hot tub. J's restaurant is right next door and hotel will give you a 10% off coupon. The Shell gas station in Gorham has a good breakfast , and great blueberry pancakes.
The Econolodge in Lake George NY and The Northwoods in Lake Placid are OK if heading to NY.
