Kincardine, Ontario, Canada | Looking for some suggestions here, I will probably start witht the cheapest, replacing the cable
Last year I ran my iPod Touch without problems, it was the first generation so I had the correct cable for charging.
This year, I swapped my iTouch for my daughters iPod Nano 2nd generation, as the Nano's battery was not holding a charge for very long and for me it didn't matter being hooked up to the bike. I've used it for 2 mths, but the past couple of weeks, every now and again, it would stop playing music while in the middle of a song. To get it working again, I would just cycle throught the AM/FM/AUX button on the dash. Yesterday the Nano died altogether, the screen is blank, I've tried charging it with my home charger and attempted the factory reset a few times. As it is a few years old I figured it's done.
Today I took my wifes iPod Nano 3rd generation and hooked it up to the bike to make sure it isn't the problem. I got the charging symbol ok, and it worked......for about 10 minutes, then quit in the middle of a song, just like the older Nano. All other functions of the radio are working normally, including the weak FM reception.. ..LOL. I immediately uncoupled the Nano in case I have a short in the cabling so that I wouldn't fry a second ipod.
I'm wondering if the iPod/Vision cable is the problem, or if there is a way to test it. Could I be having a radio issue? Has any one else experienced this kind of failure?

| I have the same problem. I have not killed the I-Pod yet but the battery never charges to read full on the icon. I had the bike parked outside in a heavy rain storm and next day it was wet and started with this problem. My wifes I-Pod does not seem to have this issue yet. |

| Don't know if it makes a difference but I wrap my Ipod in a microfiber towel and I haven't any Ipod problems. |

| If it's anything like a cell phone, it's probably dead. Numerous service techs of mine have gotten their phones wet and they all died. Had to go to a waterproof phone. I would bet the ipod/itouch is the same. |

I just started to use a cablejive charge adapter which plugs in between the ipod and cable connector a few weeks ago. It is supposed to allow the ipod to charge whereas the old style cable (non-charging) will not. Do you use this also? |

No I have the original version cable only, also all 3 iPods were earlier versions, iTouch, Nano 2 gen and Nano 3 gen, so the adapter is not required for charging.
But I think I have found my problem, a few days ago after washing the bike, I checked the cable end for green coloured corrosion, and saw none, to be cautious I spray cleaned the plug using an electronic cleaner that also expels water and wiped away the excess.
I plugged in my wife's Nano 3 gen and let it run for about 15 minutes, it was fine the entire time. So I started to experiment and wiggled the connector at the Nano base, it stopped playing and locked up. I did this a couple of times and it repeated each time. I also tried wiggling the cable where it enters the connector, with holding the connector solid to the iPod, this didn't affect it. So I figured that when riding down the road and going over bumps, must cause the iPod to bounce enough to wiggle the connector and stopping it from playing. I am assuming that the first Nano that fried was at the end of it's life and was just a coincidence that it died because of the connector issue.
I propped the Nano upright in the corner of the glovebox with the plug in at the top, then packed around it to keep it stationary. I rode to work and around for 3 days now without issues. I've been thinking of taking something like a Popsicle stick and taping both the Nano and cable to it to make the connection more rigid. If I come up with something more fancy I'll let you know. |

North Orange County CA | My nano is mounted to the inside of the glovebox using a 1.5"x1.5" velcro square. It has a nice soft turn in the cord and a dab of dielectric grease on the contacts; which was something I started doing after my wife's I-phone died. The first thing the genius bar types at the Apple store do is check the contacts for corrosion. Water = No warranty.
No problems going on 2 years with the original cord. I have only had to reboot twice, which I attributed to failing to turn off the radio before shutting down the bike. I do a complete restore every time I sync which isn't that often (also a habit).
It should be noted that my bike has very rarely seen any real rain and only gets a wash after a ride in the rain otherwise its just detailing spray and a microfiber cloth to knock the dust off it. |

VA | Candubrain, I was having very similar problems playing my iPods. It turned out to be the cable, and as I have heard, the cables were known to have issues. It never fried my nano, but I can tell you that the cable will lock them up. I actually had to do a reboot of the nano, which involves holding down the center button and play or mode, I can't remember which. However, it died on my ride fown to Myrtle Beach, about 1 hour into a 7 hour ride. Needless to say I wasn't happy. Prior to this total failure, I noticed that it was hard to switch between playlists and skipping a song would take forever, and often the display wouldn't update to the song it was currently playing. When I got to Myrtle Beach, I bought a new iPod cable at a dealer and it has been working find ever since. The cable are still $40, but I found it was the problem, I use the same iPod nano, so the cable seemed to be the problem. |

Cold Lake Alberta Canada | I have three different I Pods two dont charge and 1 does but all three of them have a problem staying plugged in properly. I also get the AUX on the display a failure to be able to controll anything except volume. Radio and Weather work like they should. I have started to use elastic bands to keep the plug tight, this seems to keep the problem under control for the most part. It only happens every now and then. I don't know if a new cable will work. |
