Well, after a ride of a couple of hundred miles today, the radio display stayed lit up after I took the key out.  Radio was not turned on the entire ride, so it didn't have anything to do with not shutting off the radio before I shut down the bike.

I thought I remembered some forum members talking about this issue, so I checked the forum and found the anwer.  I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery and left it off for 30 seconds and reconnected.  Voila!  All better - display was off and worked properly when I turned the bike on and off.

Thanks V-R forum!
