I want to turn the front forks Black in color and am wondering if the Heat used in the powder coat process will distort/warp the alloy metal in the front forks? I realize I'd probably have to rebuild the forks seals etc. because of the temps used in the process, or might be just as well off to simply have them media blasted and painted??
TIA for your thoughts...

I was wondering the same thing. Depending on answers I might have the fork legs done this winter.

Unless your forks are made of plastic they will not deform or harden. The temperatures for powder coating is only 350-400 deg. Just make sure the fluids are completely drained, and remove all the rubber seals.

+1. As a powdercoater, I've done many of these. Powdercoating is much more durable than paint so I prefer powdercoating for that reason alone. If you're going to tear them down to have them media blasted anyway, go the extra mile and have them powdercoated.

We painted my forks black with automotive paint. About 7000 miles later and ZERO problems, no nicks or anything.

True, powdercoating is more durable. However it usually is also more expensive. So I guess it depends on the cost difference between the two options. If powdercoating is less than half as much more than painting I'd recommend going that route, however if the cost is more than that then the painting option is something to think about.
