Just for future reference, the difference in max weight allowance between the Dunlop and Avon is less than 100lbs..... In other words they are both tour rated so it becomes a non-issue. Hope this helps someone.....

First let me say glad to see you back Teach.

I do have a couple of questions (and a comment) about "tour rated" tires being an acceptable substitute for the E3.

Isn't the GVWR computed with the OEM tire at max inflation? If we drop the tire load rating by 100 lbs have we not also dropped the GVWR by the same amount?

Based on those assumptions, if I do the math, my wife and I can safely carry 75 lbs of clothing, gear, and tools on the Vision. If I put on a set of Avons with a 100lb lesser load rating, one of us has to shed 25 lbs right away just to avoid overloading the bike, and thats without adding any gear.

I certainly wont have any complaints about the size of the Visions saddle bags if she wont ride with me because all her stuff is at home in the closet.

ADVANTAGE AVON!

On the other hand my ability to ride at all might be seriously threatened if she though I was out having fun without her. So lets scratch that idea!

Now - I can tell my wife that she needs to lose the weight, but I had better be wearing a full face helmet, and Kevlar/ Nomex blend underwear or standing behind a locked steel door with a six month supply of food and water when I do it.

Seems to me that buying another set of E3s is an easy way to maintain domestic tranquility and to stay safe(r).

My first E3's went away pretty fast once I found out I could line lock the front brake and boil the hides to make all my friends think I was super stuntah, in total control over a piece of equipment just slightly smaller than the space shuttle and/or nuts, but the bloom is off that rose now, and I'm looking for quite a long return on my Metzler Marathons. The weight issue doesn't really bother me since I'm on a Street model, live where it doesn't get too hot and my wife's still skinny, even if I'm not so much anymore. But when it does go, I think it's the darkside for me. If I'm on the slab all the time anyway, and the scooter tire wears square, then maybe the car tire will wear round, and they'll meet in the middle, except the middle for the CT is 50,000+ miles further down the road.

BTW: If oil threads kill kittens, do tire threads kill puppies? (=0>
