Need to charge a cell with a USB cord. Was wondering routes are available?

Was really wondering if there is a way to do a remote setup. Like a unit that I can wire in somewhere and then run the cord into the glove box or trunk.

What type of setups are the rest of you using?

I'm just using a cheap car charger. Plug it into the trunk and leave the cell phone there and call it a day. I do have the trunk liner so that helps a bit from the cell phone rattling around as I always have *ahem* junk in my trunk.

My Vision has outlets in both the trunk and the glove box, with a car charger I can use either although the one in the glovebox is only live while the bike is switched on whereas the one in the trunk is always live.

There is a USB adapter available for the cigarette plug in the trunk. I got mine from target, I believe the brand is "Griffin". It was displayed in the electronics section where IPod accessories were displayed. It is very small with 2 USB charge ports (in case the little lady wants to charge on the road at the same time) and just barely protrudes from the plug. This way you can carry just one cord, the USB cord, and plug into the bike via adapter and then into the computer at work via the USB port with the same cord.

Here is an example: http://www.focalprice.com/IPH05B/Genuine_GRIFFIN_Dual_USB_Car_Charg...

Rather nicely actually. I do have to make sure that nothing is putting any pressure on it, but I haven't had any problems so far with the fit.

You will need to get an adapter from powerlet. They have adapers to change to a standard outlet or cables to change to a micro or mini usb. They aren't cheap but your other option would be to replace the powerlet with a standard outlet.

Or you could replace the Powerlet's with standard cigar lighter plugs.

Well, I wondered why Victory sold those, my 2011 has normal size cigar sockets so no adaptor needed. Wonder what year this changed?

Silly me, I thought he was talking about the standard plug...now this begs the question, why in the world would they put in something besides a standard plug!?

Power let fit a lot snugged and can handle more current.

Powerlet or BMW style plug is a standard for some regions as far as motorcycle plugs go. Not so much in the US. Victory changed out the plug in the glove box to a standard american cigarette plug starting with the 2010 visions. As far as heated gear goes, the powerlet style is pretty much the standard everywhere. The plug snaps in more securely and as was said earlier it will handle much higher current flow.

Thanks, never knew that I had always assumed (incorrectly it seems) that the standard cigarette lighter plug was well, standard to all vehicles. Learn something new everyday.

My heated gear all came with RCA style connectors.... and I thought I saw the same kind of plug on some Gerbings I was shopping for online last year.... Why would it be preferable to use a powerlet plug (which from pictures appears to be at least twice the diameter of an RCA plug) over an RCA style?

If I'm going to drill a hole in my console for an outlet, I'd rather have a smaller hole there....

The powerlet terminals are curved and spring loaded and there are several of them all the way around the plug. This provides a very tight and secure, vibration proof connection at the bike with high current capacity. The "RCA" style plug is meant to be the universal connection for the garments of all brands on the market, and are intended to be plugged into the bike via an adapter pigtail. Where the connection is made to the bike it is critical that you have a very tight and secure connection due to the effect of vibration and arcing at electrical connection. The RCA connection to the adapter cord hangs free and experiences almost no vibration. Also the nature of the RCA style is very compact in the in line method of connection. You will find the same connectors in the wrist pockets and waist band of your heated jacket for the purpose of connecting gloves and pants if you choose. In-line powerlet connections would be very large, impractical and unnecessary for this application.

Obviously any method within reason will work because we are talking relatively low currents and 12V DC. The powerlet style has sort of be accepted as the most reliable for long term reliability. They also come with a built in weather cover for when not in use.

Regarding the cigarette plug design change on the vision. Victory has caved in to demand, albeit wisely, because us old farts that buy these bikes like that style of 12V accessory plug because that's what is in our cars and trucks. And we hate change. And some have complained enough to draw negative attention to the brand.
Frankly the "standard" 12V plug as we know it is probably the worst design for the purpose of connecting modern electronic devices to a vibrating machine. They are not designed with close tolerances, or even standardized designs, to combat the arcing and therefore interference caused by weak electrical connections. They are simply and afterthought of an archaic appliance added to vehicles decades ago when smoking was some what a universal habit.

Simply put the cigarette lighter plug was originally designed for one purpose, to produce a great deal of resistance heat in a few seconds to light a cigarette. Later someone had an epiphany and discovered they could use the same thing for other 12V appliances. Sixty years later we old fogies think it's the only right way to "get Juice". If you think about it it's an absurdly over-sized method to connect to low current 12V DC.

The BMW style accessory plug is the German solution to the problem if you will. And many if not most have in the motorcycle accessory world have accepted it. Victory recognized that the Vision demographic gets confused with some newfangled gadgets and chose not to make it worse, this case not to big a risk on their part to settle us whining old farts down.

If Polaris would give into demands that easy, why didn't they go American standard in their bolt sizes instead of the metric? I'm content with the new fangle plug because it is a better way to connect electronics.

Can't say I've heard anyone complain about the metric bolts, of course the american auto companies all switched to metrics years ago and I guess most are used to that by now. And as far as the new fangle connection plug I like it much better as well. Besides, who in their right mind wants a 12V plug the size of a 12GA shotgun shell just to plug in say, a cell phone???? Seems laughable to me.
