Not trying to start a debate as I have read through several on here and on thevmc.com. I did my first oil change yesterday for the 2500 mile marker.

Went to O'Rielly and grabbed a Wix 51356 filter. The guy behind the counter looked up the filter and said it was the 51358 and switched them.

Is there going to be a problem using the 51358? I know nothing about filters or differences in oil.

Used that a new washer and 4.5 quarts of Valvoline 20 50w.

Do a search at the WIX site to make sure but all I see as the difference is just the length. 8 is 2.7, 6 is 3.4

I've never put Valvoline 20w-50 in a bike. I do hope you are referring to 4-stroke oil which is rated JASO-MA so as not to ruin your clutch. Sorry, I don't know about that filter, either, except that last month, I used the Wix 51356.

The 51358 is shorter and has less capacity. The 356 is the preferred WIX. It is identical to the factory Polaris filter....

The oil I used was the 4-stroke oil with the Jaso-Ma rating. It was that or Castro T4 motorcycle oil.. I went to EVERY auto parts store in my city and everyone had the same oil.

Will the less capacity of the oil filter affect anything or should I call Wix? This is going to really piss me off if I wasted all the money I spent on the oil only to have to redo the whole thing because they guy gave me the wrong one.

My $.02 is to stick to the factory filter and oil. In case of engine damage there will be little said by the warranty IF you are using the products that they endorse for the bikes. There is a reason they chose those products.

I used the Wix web site to look up filters for the Vic bikes. I'd say the parts store miss read his chart. The only Vic's that are listed that use the 51358 are the '05 and earlier V92's. That having been said, I really doubt there is any difference in construction, just the amount of surface area within the filter media due to the shorter can size. With the short oil change interval it would be all but impossible to to clog up the filter media to the point of oil starvation prior to your next oil change. Also if you had a reduction in oil flow your oil pressure light on the dash would come on if it were too low.

Next time just as for the 51356 filter without revealing what for. If they are out have them check on availability at other stores. You can also check this yourself on the O'Reily web site before you leave the house.

Lastly what you use is up to you, some prefer to play it extra safe, (Victory name brands only), nothing at all wrong with safe. For what it's worth, I've disassembled and compared the Vic branded filter with the Wix 51356. There is absolutely no difference in the two right down to the markings on the internal components. I like the Wix at half the price of the Vic labeled Wix. Good luck and don't make too much of this unless you are racing your bike for a living.

Rakk17, I would go ahead and purchase the Wix 51356 or a NAPA 1356, same filter just has a NAPA sticker on it. Remove the 51358 filter and screw on the new filter. You will loose a little bit of the oil while doing that. Then top off to the full mark on the stick and "Giddy - Up" on down the road.

I agree...just purchase the new (correct) filter.  Swap out the incorrect filter with it.  Top up the oil to the full mark (probably 1/4 of a quart +/-).  You have done no damage to your bike.  No Blood...No Foul!

The 51358 is the motorcycle specific filter, and is used on lots of different brands of bikes. It's shorter than the 51356 because of clearance issues some bikes have. Our Victorys have no such clearance issues and can use the 51356. It's actually listed for some cars and small industrial engines. A lot of parts store listings do call for the 51358 for our bikes, so when the parts guy looks it up, that's what the listing says. fact is though, the only difference in the two filters is the overall length and the price. Since a lot more 1356 filters get sold than 1358, the economy of scale makes the price of the longer filter cheaper than the short one. You're fine with the 51358, as it is actually the one specified for your bike. A lot of us choose to use the 51356 to save a buck or two and gain a tiny bit more filtering area. Either filter is fine. The 51358 is also the same filter the Honda Goldwing uses.

I use the Purolater PL14610 which is approx. 3.5" long. This filter has more filter media than a Mobil x-life filter. The next great factor is that the Purolator Pureone has a rebate right now of $3.00 on a $6.99 filter, don't get any better than that. I use them on by 2011 RAM also and am very happy with the performance. My thought as to oil on the Vic's is factory, they did a lot of research to come up with this blend for us folks. Not CHROME, but very functional...

Well, when I get down on my hands and knees (not easy at my age) and peer under my bike, I can see my CHROME filter !
I also can see it on my invoice from my dealer when he does an oil change..... I prefer this method over the 'hands & knees' method.

My CHROME filter part # 2875246 with washer is only $21.24. Why go cheap on the World's Finest Motorcycle ????

why pay more for something when the cheaper one works just as well. I say that with confidence because of the few unbias reports on filter and quality actually rates the supertech above some of the premium filters. I'm just saying I need the gas and tire money so I can keep riding this fine machine...

Sorry, Cap'n. You KNOW I'm just being sarcastic! But at my age - I ain't climbing under ANYTHING to get dirty to save a buck. I'll be dead (or unable to ride) soon enough - and I don't wanna waste my time doing that shit. I'd just as well rather waste my money...

Oh - and the Dealer gives me a new Vision to ride for a couple of hours - so I get to find out that I ain't buying a new one cuz they're not that much better!

I'm witcha on some of those things. I'm amazed at what I don't do and willing to pay a buck to get someone else to do it. But at the same time it's hard to keep the fingers out of the grease. I really do use the $2.88 filter and I like to say that because I know it is a silent killer to some people. I have not issues with my bike and I'll soon be rolling...wait....yes dear, I'm on my way...later.

Yes indeed... there is a reason. These products are manufactured for them by a third party subcontractor at the lowest bid to meet minimum specs in order to add $$$ to the bottom line. NOT necessarily the best product, but one that serves it's purpose.

As far as warranty goes... read the Magnuson-Moss Act... Unless Polaris (Victory) requires the use of their products AND SUPPLIES THEM TO US AT NO CHARGE they cannot void the warranty on their vehicles as long as products of a similar or improved specifications are used.

Oh... on topic. Just use the filter that's on there for now. Won't hurt a thing and is filtering just as well as any other filter will.
