Leaving the 15th with a group of mostly HD riders for Wall. We'll hit mount rushmore, the badlands and a lot more. Anybody got any words of wisdom, tips, dos and don'ts?

See the Badlands in early morning or late afternoon, they look a lot better and have more colors.
Stop at an interstate rest area information booth when getting into South Dakota and ask for a South Dakota Motorcycle Roads map, it will show the roads in the Black Hills that are rated by skill level.

While in the Black Hills you need to ride these roads.
Iron Mountain Road
Needles Highway
The Old Keystone Road
Custer State Park
Spearfish Canyon
Vanocker Canyon to Nemo Road
Ride to Devil's Tower in Wyoming

Basically there are no bad roads!
Enjoy the trip but watchout of the deer and wildlife in the Black Hills.

Don't GO.
I went there 35 years ago and go back every year. Why I don't live there is beyond me. The black hills is breath taking at every turn. Spearfish canon is great devils tower is wow. I hope you have a lot of time to spend out there. There is camping and motels all over the place and plenty of gas stops.
Great food and biker friendly people.

I couldn't find any bad roads in S.D. and yes Badlands Natl Park was one of my favorite places to see.

Why not live there? Maybe in one word... WINTER! After 38 winters in MN and ND I moved south... TN or GA since '92. My wife and I went to the Black Hills and Yellowstone in '08 on our new Vision some 40,000 miles ago and wondered why we wouldn't want to live out there... same reason, WINTER. Since buying my first Victory in '04 I have ridden a motorcycle in every month but 1. June of '05 my bike was in the shop from a wreck on May 28 (Got rear ended and my bike and I recovered OK) and got my bike back July 3.

Back on subject... If your staying in Rapid City there is a little restaurant called Tally's next to the famous hotel downtown that has very tasty "pigs in a blanket" made with Buffalo sausage. And the "Firehouse" Brewery/Restaurant has fantastic Bison Steaks (And a good beer selection) And ride the "Needles Highway" but don't feed the chipmunks... some tree hugger will cuss you out for ruining their diet.

If you have time ride to Custer State Park and ride the wildlife loop... have your camera ready at all times!

Take Kioti's list, add Deadwood, stay at the Buffalo Chip and enjoy great concerts every night as part of the package. I learned during the week I was there that 3-4 hours of sleep a night was plenty! LOL LOL LOL

Awesome trip, thanks guys for the tips. We did a lot. Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer, Sturgis, Deadwood, Colorado Rockies. Saw some amazing things. Wild jack asses, buffalo, prairie dogs, moose, deer.

Most of our pics are here if you're interested.

Thanks for the photos. There is nothing like going across the open prairie when its cold I think it puts new life in you. Of coarse when the sun gets high and the heat bakes you your new life slips away.
When are you going back to the Black Hills? I think it one of the prettiest places to rife a bike.

John I understand what you mean about the temps. Our average temp during riding was probably 103. We saw air temps hover around 105 and one period of 15 or 20 minutes in Kansas of 109, OUCH!

Stop in to visit the folks at Rice Honda/ Victory in Rapid City. Great group of people and the owner is a hoot! Broke down last year at Sturgis and they got me up and running ASAP! Mr. Rice's daughter drove me and my wife to a rental car place so we could continue to see the black hills while waiting for our new part to come in the next day. I will visit them every trip!

I wanted to stop by Rice but we were in Rapid City on Monday and they were closed. My HD buddies kept on and on about how their brand had such an awesome network with many dealers open 7 days a week.
Regardless of dealer numbers, hours or locations, I love my Vision and my wifes Vegas
