I think I have figured out what is with the temperature display showing negative numbers when it is below 32 degrees F (or I could be totally off base - but it works for what I have observed this week).

Based on recent temps out when I have been going to work, I think it displays Celsius when it is below freezing.  This morning it was 23 degrees outside when I was coming in to work, and it showed -5 on the display.  Yesterday it showed -2 and it was around 28 degrees.  Here are some approximate temps:

C     F

-1   30

-2   28

-3   26

-4   24

-5   23

-6   21

-7   19

-8   17

-9   15

-10  14

-11  12

-12  10

-13   8

-14   6

-15   5  and so on...

Converting from C to F is just a matter of multiplying the Celsius temp by 9/5 and adding 32.

And I thought that the -8 that it was reading meant 28 F. Darn, it was pretty cold out that morning.

Thanks - I think.

Looks like the Canadians snuck one in on us!

Now I'm gonna have to switch my speedometer from MPH to KPH so that it only takes 112 MPH to indicate 180.

Take off you Hosers!

I suggested that in the first POST on this subject....and also mentioned it was likely a foreign supplier of that component that was responsible - us Kanucklheads would never be THAT sneaky.....

Mine reads normal temps, ie if it is 29 F that is what it reads. Seems strange yours is doing the negative number thing.

They own a bike with all metric fasteners and they wonder why?
I remember taking a summer class on the metric system when I was in about 4th grade. USA was going to change to be like the rest of the world. Yeah, that never happened. Everything in 10ths is so much easier. Maybe it was the tool companies that stopped it so we have to have 2 sets of tools in our boxes now? I helped my tenant change his serpentene belt in his Pontaic a couple years back. When removing the shock support to get the belt out it had 2 SAE bolts and 1 Metric? How stupid is that? 1 to remove the support 2 to have different fasteners on the same piece. Maybe that's why GM closed them?
safe riding Phil

mine is a source of entertainment, no rhyme or reason below freezing. It can read -9 and be 29 or 19. Today it started at -3 and then it read -9 the rest of the way and it warmer but not above freezing.

With the above logic, then I have a new record, mine seems to like -9. Which would be 15 degreess. Brrrrr!

Lone Ranger,

Mine is doing exactly as you describe below 32 deg. It's kind of annoying since I often ride in cold temps. I use the thermometer to determine how to dress for my next ride.

I wonder if the sensor might be resting against something that is giving folks a negative reading when it should be in the teens or 20's? I have not looked at the sending schematics, does anyone know where it gets its signal?

I am thinking it was said to be somewhere near or behind the left mirror.

Least that's what I thought I read before, think I saw it once too.
Then again I have slept since then.
I could be wrong.
I could be right too.

Least I use the right oil!

Yes, the sensor is located behind the left mirror. It can be accessed by removing the aluminum cowling in front of the windshield.
