Has anyone else noticed that less air is deflected toward the hands when the windshield is all the way down?

I have been riding 5 days per week with temps in the mid 20's in the morning. I accidently left the windshield down after messing with the bike one night. When I left for work the next morning my hands seemed much warmer. I turned off the heated grips. The grips have been on for about 3 weeks straight. I eventually realized the windshield was down and raised it. I soon had to turn the grips back on. I found this very odd.

On my way home from work the temp was near 40 so I could do a test with lighter gloves. I raised and lowered the windshield a dozen or more times at a constant 70 mph. I could feel the difference immediately since the lighter gloves were vented. The higher the windshield the more I could feel the cold air coming through the vents in the gloves.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this too?

I noticed it to.    If you put it up all the way, it exposes the notches on the bottom outside edges of the windshield.  These outside lower notches allow the wind to go through when it is all the way up.  Just lower the shield a couple of inches to hide the lower outside notches and you should be good to go.

HTH,

Tim

In the winter time I put on the tall windshield from Victory and that still allows me to see over, and keep it all the way down. The only time I put the windshield up is when it is raining hard, sometimes, put especially when it is cold and raining hard. That poses the foremention problems and having cold and wet hands is not fun as I found out. The heated grips offset the cold as it keeped my hands warm through the soggy gloves, but that is still no way to ride. I'm working on finding a good way to waterproof my gloves so if that happens again, they'll repell the rain. However, I'd like to find a way to raise the windshield and deflect the wind coming through the cut-outs at the same time.

TimS,
I think you are right about the air coming through the cutouts.

varyder,
Taller windshield in the down position during the winter sounds like a good idea. The price for the windshield is well worth extending my riding season another month at the beginning and end of winter.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I noticed the effect you are describing, but I can keep my hands warm with good gloves plus grip heaters. I have yet to see the Victory part number for face defrosters, so I'll keep my windshield up, thanks.

I'm 6'4", so dropping the shield puts me immediately in the freezer.

On a side note, you should have seen me coming home from VA Beach last summer. It was raining off and on, so I had my really cheap plastic raincoat on. When the rain slacked off, I dropped the shield a smidge. I could feel the wind hitting the top pf my helmet. The sun came out and I dropped it a smidge more. Now the wind shear zone was on my face. It felt weird, so I dropped the shield one more time. The wind shear zone hit my neck, went into the collar of the jacket, got stopped my the elastic hem and cuffs, and inflated my raincoat like an America's Cup spinnaker..... POP! Instant Michelin Man. Some chick in the car next to me watched the whole thing and sprayed the inside of her boyfriend's SUV with soda when it happened. I damn near wrecked, myself.

A little trick for keeping your hands warm, Sounds dumb but works.
Get yourself a pair of rubber surgical gloves and wear them under you cold weather gloves. Keeps the heat in the air out and your hands will stay toasty warm

...And your then ready to do any unscheduled surgery if it should arise! Just remember to scrub in before you ride!

clubford, I hate to pop your bubble but your claim is dead wrong. If you put on surgical gloves your hands will perspire and that is trapped thus increasing the chilling effect on the hands. If it is pouring down rain surgical gloves under your outer gloves will help ward off the cold, but this won't work for winter riding. Your hands will get soooooo cold you won't be able to move them and will sting in short order.

As to the windshield effect, yes if you run the ws down the hands will stay warmer and it is due to the cutout. I posted about this some time back. I run the tall Vic ws and it still isn't tall enough to avoid raising it for face protection in extremely cold temps. This in turn means the hands get extra wind via the notches. I'm pondering some possible slip ons so the ws can remain up and the notch filled with a slip on wing. Just need some time to experiment.

With heated grips and winter gloves my hands don't get cold. My hands get hot when I put the winshield down.

I'm 6'2", so my face is above the windshield when it is down. In the winter I wear a full face helmet. As far as my face goes, it makes no difference if the windshield is up or down. That's why I didn't notice the windshield was down for several miles on the interstate. The only difference I noticed was hot hands.

I'm just thinking that I could wear lighter gloves if I use a taller windshield in the down position. I could wear my summer gloves later in the fall and earlier in the spring.
