Those of you that painted your console black, do you have to prep it some way and prime it first? I removed mine today to get ready for the install of my 2820 when it gets here so I thought maybe I'd paint it.

when I do mine over I'm going to prime it first and when I paint it I'll let it cure for about 2 days.

I don't know what the painter did before he put the black on then the clear coat on all the tin I gave him. I'd be surprised if they didn't primer it first.

instead of worrying about chipping paint. I had mine wrapped in black with my own graphics printed into it. then if it gets messed up
i can pull it off and start over or leave it brushed aluminum. I spoke with someone on here who had his painted, and in no time got paint chips etc. perhaps it wasnt primed, dont know...

I took mine to the local powder coating shop and had it powder coated. Looks as good as paint, will not fade, and is very durable.

I took mine off and sanded the unit, used self etching primer, a coat of regular auto primer and resanded.  I used auto grade high closs black (3 coats)  and 3 coats of clear coat.   Ii did both the console and the guage bezzel this way.   No chipping so far!

I did the same thing. Racershawn did this for me at a very reasonable rate. Looks great too!

Thanks for all the feedback. Might look into the powdercoating.

The good thing about the wrap is when you are tired of it, peel it off and design something new. Paint is forever,,, Im actually about to remove my wrap because im having the GPS installed, and will do a new design wrap.

I had everything grey painted black with factory paint from the dealer. The guy that actually sprayed it said he used "self etching" primer .
