Dallas, Texas | Well, my battery died, while at work. I knew it was getting weak, but thought it was okay it get back home. I was wrong. Anyway, there was a downhill ramp, and was able to get to it. Turned on the ignition, put it in 2nd gear, pulled in the clutch and rolled. It started on the first release but made a loud,crackly 'pop', and started. The engine light stayed on for a couple minutes, and went out. Seemed to run fine, and made it back to the house. Once I get a new battery in, is there anything that i should check? In other words does push starting our Visions do any damage? I wouldn't do it everyday, but had no choice.

New Bohemia, VA | I've have mine die on a roll and I released the clutch to get it started again and all it would is lock of the rear wheel. What would I be doing wrong in these attempts? I didn't think it was easy to push start our v-twins. |

I didn't think it was easy to push start our v-twins. Try one gear higher, the crankshaft will turn a little slower, but if it doesn't at least rotate the crank you have no chance. |

| If your battery died there wouldn't be enough power to turn on the fuel pump to get fuel to the injectors. So it would be near impossible to push start a Vic with a closed loop system. |

It would greatly depend on how "dead" the battery was. You need pretty close to 13V to make a starter turn but I'd bet the fuel pump would be happy with 12V. That 1V makes a big difference. |

With a stone dead battery that is accurate but you need less than 10% of the wattage that it takes to crank it over, to spin the pump and trigger the injectors. Can't really use the headlight as an indicator since it doesn't light until ignition. So if you can build pressure enough to fire the injectors a handful of times it will probably fire up and as soon as the generator is spinning the battery isn't needed. The concern is if you do that for too long you're taxing the charging system components trying to replenish the battery as well as maintain system loads. So to make it a mile or two home, no big deal, but to try to go a hundred miles might end up costing a lot more than you save on a cheap battery. |
