Hi Everybody:

I am having a voltage problem on my 2009 VV with 8K miles. At WOT the dash gauge shows 15.5 volts and it's just over 14 at cruise. However, at idle it drops down to 10.5-11 amps. I have had the radio mute itself and give a "Low Voltage" warning a couple times and it even stalled once on my 125 mile ride this morning. Finally, the battery idiot light is illuminated when I start the bike and stays on until I start to move. I'm sure there are a bunch of you who know exactly what the problem is, but electrical ain't my thing.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Firstly, check your battery conections. Make sure they are clean and tight.

get a full charge in battery stop by a place and have a load test on battery.
Get down on the ground and check the plug inns on the regulator. If there dirty pull a part and clean then put some die electric grease on them.
If it keeps up you'll need a meter and the manual to check stator.
Find out what it is before riding more you can burn up a stator or regulator

I tightened up the terminal screws. They each took about 3/4 of a turn. Took it for a little test ride and seems to have solved the problem.

If you come back here or any one that reads this next time at hardware store buy two of these 1/4" sizes.

Johnnyvision, don't know how, maybe riding in the rain, but I put a pair of those on this spring and they have already rusted enough to interfere with the conductivity of the connection. After removing the connections, sanding away the rust, everything is good once again. Try to find stainless if at all possible! Just thought I'd pass that along.

Never use star washers or lock wachers on a battery, circuit breaker, hell anything electrical! It only reduces the contact area, thus poor conductivity. Use flat waher or for best results use a shouldered bolt/nut.
Just my opinion.

Does anyone ever use dielectric grease around battery terminals?

My (2009) voltage regulator failed and caused the same problems, including burning up two batteries. The dealer replaced the voltage regulator as a warranty item but I had already replaced the battery, it burned up also, and I got stuck paying for the third battery

seriously... when in doubt check the battery terms..... i have owned two visions and each one had a slight issues and was resolved by simply tightening the battery terminals ... Two weeks ago i had a issue where when i hit 5-6 gear it would sputter and backfire bad... i got home. i was 99% sure the battter terminals were perfect and didnt need checked.. so i did it just to say i checked them, and wouldnt you know.... the positive terminal was 1 full turn, and boom! Fixed.... sounds silly but after 5 years of reading posts on here ive learned.... check battery terminal before pulling your hair out.... Im glad it was a simple, easy and Cheap fix!

Jell battery's don't get corrosion like old acid battery's. No need for grease.

Cables come loose cause Vic will not move forward to the new welder style cables that flex.

Best bet is to use stainless star washers never come loose and no loose of juice
