I wonder with all the troubleshooting on this board, how many of you have been able to sway your tech into trying your ideas and how many of them were right. I got into a conversation with my lead tech and he told me everytime a certain fella comes in and tells him what the problem is and how to fix it, the guy is never right. Of course, he learned of it from a forum board. Sounds like this should be another post.

Let the eyes get to rollin' and the nashing of teeth. Hey, where's my popcorn and Dr. Pepper.

I agree with your tech, albeit there might be a good ideas on a forum, but I would hope that the techs get their information straight from Victory/Polaris and not be surfing the internet looking for unvalidated solutions.

My dealer - Sea-To-Sky-Motorsports - says that all of us are 'full of shit'.

Now, he is right. But I tell him 'he is full of shit'.

And every time I go into the dealership - I program all their computers to start on VISION-RIDERS website. Pisses them off.... <grin>

But I'm EVIL and some day they will 'get it' - and learn from us....

I guess being a Watercraft Engineer and actually knowing how to work on vehicles, I have very little faith in dealers. I'm not talking Victory specific, just in general. Especially with Chevy, I don't know how many times I took my truck in under warranty telling them what the problem was, they say I don't think that's it. Then two days later call and tell me the same thing I told them. Subaru also. I took my Vic in once and the dealer was very good. But he did read some forums. I know there is a bunch of crap on forums but also a wealth of knowledge. You just need to know how to weed through it.

I have found most of the stuff on the Goldwing board pretty accurate. I remember once telling the Honda Mechanic about a heavier duty trunk release mechanism as an option recall. He called right away and got the last 4 in stock for awhile from Honda. He mentioned the next time I stopped in. He thanked me.

I feel that people have to learn..... no one knows everything. If a mechanic is not willing to learn something new, then he will definetly get left behind. Polaris does not teach them all the tricks just some... most mechanics adapt and are more than willing to learn something new..If not i think you need a new mechanic.

As a mechanic that spends time on lots of forums, and tend to have a pretty good track record. I will give these points.
Diag of a machine across the internet is not easy
Accurate information adds to accurate diagnostics weather you are at the bike or on the web
Closed minds make for poor mechanics
I learn at an awful lot of things myself on these forums that make my customers bikes run much better

All that said I will add these tidbits. I very often give my number to people that have closed minded mechanics or guys with to big an ego to listen to a customer. About 75% of the time I DO get a call, and when PROPERLY EXPLAINED what/why needs to be done. The mechanic learns things and the customer gets improved service.
For the customer understanding and communicating are very important. One of my favorite moments was when a customer came into the store, and when it was explained what he needed. His bike was suffering from complete lack of maintenance other then oil changes. The guy responded with..."You guys don't know what you are talking about. This guy KEVINX says that I can service my own bike as well as a dealer" I told him that I was pretty sure that kevinx would have added. "As long as you really service it, and don't just change the oil; calling it a service" After that I walked back into the shop. About 10 minutes later the service writer brought me the ticket; laughing the whole time. After I walked out she had told the disgruntled customer that it was me he was quoting. So yes sometimes people come in with incomplete ideas, and I tell them they need to check their source

I guess I have a better relationship with my dealer and their techs.

When my "TUNE + -" on the audio controller failed to "TUNE -" any more I said that rain got into it and it failed.....it is a warranty item and needed to be replaced. I had one in a week.

When my front brake "brake light switch" failed. They had the replacement in four days. It was installed in less than 10 minutes of showing up.

Kevinx,

I always enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for hanging in there and helping us wayward Victory riders.

I like my Vic mechanic, my post was more general. Especially GM. Never happy with those guys.

When I do have a problem I have a conversation with either who's on the counter or Jay(mech) about what I have read. Many times they come up with the same answer as I mentioned. The important thing is they are willing to listen and Anny runs GREAT.

The ultimate compliment... When a dealer I know has tried all their usual procedures and resources to fix a problem but has not gotten satisfaction, one of the things they do is look to our forums for insight thinking that while they may not get a solution, what they read might will give them a new perspective and spark a new approach. Sometimes they even call me to ask if I've heard anything "on the street".

This I know for certain: Not all mechanics are created equal......and even more importantly, not all customers are created equal.
