Hello All
Just bought a new vision tour and was wondering if there is anything I could do to quiet the first 3 gears a little. The last 3 gears are smooth as butter but when I'm climbing a mountain I almost go deaf with the sound of the engine. The bike is brand new. I heard the full synthetic oil will make the lower gears quieter. Appreciate any advice.

You have problems my friend and I would advise you to take it back to your dealer!!! That noise is not normal!

Just enjoy the sound of mechanical parts doing their thing - and be happy its not just another artificially smooth UJM. It will quiet down over time (or you will get used to it). You can research many threads here using the search function that will say blah blah blah on the subject - but offer NO cures. Just enjoy....

come on guys, can't you recognize the birth of an oil thread. Yes full syn will take down the noise some, don't know how much for yours but it pad it a little. Based off your post text it don't seem you have a problem, but if it VERY LOUD takes the Plum's advice.

I'm sure it's hard for you to describe how loud is loud. Good advice to have the dealer check it for you. But I noticed my bike to about 1,500 miles to quiet down the 4th and 6th gear whines. Now I have about 16,000 miles, and just normal transmission noise.
Some break in time is required

Hey Kodonell1, first congrats on your purchase, great choice. Like Dontracey said there are a lot of info here about what you are experiencing with the noise. First of all it is a little louder then one would expect if you are coming from a metric bike but that's the sound of the trans. Drive the unit back to the dealer and have them inspect it or take one of theirs for a spin and see if it sounds the same. If they tell you it is normal then drive it until your first oil change and put in Amsoil, I was completely amazed in the difference the sound of the trans. You have to wear the gears in first... also if you go into the on line parts manual on victories website and look at the trans gears and shaft it will make more sense why it is doing it in the first 4 gears. If it is any relief when I first bought it I wasn't to crazy about the noise almost to the point of not riding it...... as much as I wanted, but after 5500 miles and amsoil ( THE OIL IS THE TRICK- BELIEVE ME ) I love the sound of the trans and exhaust ( stage one -level one ) Dont even hear it anymore. enjoy

I thought my trans. was loud when I first got it. Either I got used to it, or it quieted down. I think it was a little of both. I wouldn't worry about it too much, after about 5k miles on the bike you wont even notice it anymore. I use the Victory oil in mine.

Hey Chris ! You were right... another OIL thread......YIPEEE

So here goes. I don't know what oil I have in the Spaceship - my dealer puts something in it twice a year and charges me a bunch of bucks. My gear noise is either 'quieter' or I have learned to ignore it. Either way - don't matter a damn to my enjoyment....

OK...here is the story...

The bike making noise the first 1500 miles is normal. The first 500 is the worst. I have said this on another post months ago, but here goes again. My dad hopped on the bike and told me to take it back to the dealer as it was WAY too loud. I did my first 500 miles the next day and took the bike in for the service. It was 50% quieter. I rode the next 500 the following weekend and again took it back for that service. It was now 50% quieter again. Meaning it was now 25% quieter than when I left the shop the first day.

So...IT IS NORMAL for the first 1000 miles for sure.

I have over 13k on the bike and I notice two things as I approach the 2500 mile service interval. 1. it starts getting loud...2. it doesn't shift as smoothly. Service the bike and I fall in love all over again. Its all in the oil (said for Vary...ha ha!). I have been running what the dealer puts in the pan each time. I haven't worried about synthentic...etc. Just run it and love it! Take care of it and it will quiet down! I promise!

The straight cut gears on the Victory motorcycle transmissions are noisy to most folks, but they are robust. Very few failures. There is a service manual here in the tech area you can down load to see how the tranny is put together and how the power is transfered through the bike. There is a WHOLE bunch of info on oil here, please search for that. If you really think the noise is bad, have your service department check it out. Enjoy your new ride, there is nothing like it!

Give it some time and miles. As the miles build on the motor it will become less noisy. You might also bounce between Mobil1 and Amsoil or some other oil and Amsoil. The Amsoil appears to both quiet and cool motor operation but unfortunately it also may cause you some slippage if run all the time. I've been tossing in Mobil1 between every 2 Amsoil changes and the slip on mine is gone.

I reported this as I broke in my '08 tour premium in the late spring. The advice everyone gives is correct and the bike will quiet with miles. I am a little obsessive about changing oil during break in, I don't think the Vic needs it as much as a Harley though. I still changed out oil and filter three times by 2,500 miles. Way I figure did not hurt. Also around 1,700 miles I did a ride with the wife and ended up in the mountains. Central PA is full of steep not so tall climbs and for the first time I found myself being able to really work the lower gears both climbing and accelerating and from that day on the trannie was quieter.

Break the transmission down and put AMISOL on the gears - hand rub it in - and .... nothing will happen.
