Am planning a ride the first part of June from Tucson to Yellowstone NP. Anybody have any must do rides in the area? Also am looking to stay at a KOA campground and have found there are 3 that I would consider. Kind of steering towards the one at the northwest entrance from Montana but am up for suggestions.

I highly recomend you ride the Bearthooth Highway that you can get to if you go out the northeast gate of Yellowstone. It goes up into Montana with tons of twisties, views, and elevation.

I will try to look up the roads we used but we came out of Graybull Wyoming and cut accross the Sawtooth Mountains to enter Yellowstone from the East. that was one of the best rides ever my wife fears heights but she got thru it and is the most beautiful counrty in the world I think. Wish I could go back again but not this year at least. Archie

It maybe very cold the first week to 10 days of June in Yellowstone. One year I was there it snowed on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June. It is a fantastic place to visit, I have not been there on the bike, but will soon. Enjoy your trip.

Great ride in from Wyoming - via East Entrance. Ride from Thermopolis Wy to Eastgate is beautious. Thermopolis is neat 'volcanic hot tub' town - loved it there. Always had great weather from Northwest all the way to Salt Lake - have done that a dozen times thru Yellowstone.

Thanks, guys. Am now thinking of staying somewhere near the east entrance. That makes Beartooth Pass rideable, weather permitting.

Mike,

I made this trip two years ago...last week of May. We stayed at the KOA in West Yellowstone for 3 days and it was an excellent stay. I will say that there was still lots of snow on the ground in most areas and it didn't get over 45 degrees any day we were there. We tried to head out of the east entrance but ran into bad weather and lots of snow near Sylvan Pass and decided to turn around. The road to Mammoth Hot Springs was closed too.

Long story short, we still had a great time and wouldn't trade it for anything. There was still plenty to see and enjoy.

Ride Safe,

Ken

There are a lot of great rides in the area and a ton to see. Here are some of my favorites. The ride between Vernal Utah and Rock Springs (191) is awesome. On the border you will see the Flaming George which is really cool. The ride into Thermopolis from the south takes you through Wind River Canyon which is about as nice as it gets. There is a cool Holiday Inn in Thermopolis that I highly recommend (about $80 night for pool side room). It has "the Safari Club" which is a bar full of animal mounts that the owner killed. I mean this guy is a regular Marlin Perkins and has literally killed thousands of big game animals. They also have a real Hot Springs hot tub. This sucker is about 20' long and about 5 foot wide. An experience you will always remember. I would definitely stay a couple of nights in Cody. A great little town that has a lot to offer. The Erma Hotel is neat to see and has a good breakfast buffet. They stage a gunfight or two every day so you might catch that going on. Cody has a Rodeo every night of the week so there are plenty of cowboys and cowgirls running around all the time. Several outside beer gardens with live country music playing. Cody also has the "Wild Bill Cody" museum there which is as good as any museum I have ever been too. This baby is professionally done and you could literally spend a day there if you wanted to. We spent about 3 hours there one evening after our ride through Bear Tooth Pass. Great place to see wild west history and a gun lovers dream (over 10,000) A good ride from Cody takes you north on the Chief Joseph Hwy where you hit 212. A right turn will take you across "The Top of the World" which is also know as Bear Tooth Pass which dumps you into Red Lodge Montana. From there we just did a wide loop and headed back to Cody. This is real mountain riding and is fairly slow going so you will not log a ton of miles this day. This is a MUST DO and truly a ride you will remember for a lifetime. The ride from Cody straight west is an awesome ride that brings into the lower loop of Yellowstone. If it was me I would dedicate 1 day to the lower loop and another day to the upper loop. There is a ton to see in Yellowstone and you can easily spend more time off your bike than on it. A lot of people make a big deal out of Jackson Hole, we planned on staying there a night but decided to ride on through. For me it was just a busy little tourist trap and not near as much fun as some of the smaller towns. Enjoy your trip!

Man, all great info...I know weather will play a big part of where we can ride but since I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere it will be good. Just hoping Bear Tooth pass will be open. Thanks alot for the suggestions.

If your in Cody eat at Bubba's BBQ. It is awesome. I'd take it over anything in Kansas City.
In Jackson the Teton Steakhouse is great also.
Beartooth pass is great. I'm even saying that after getting hailed on while riding through.
Yellow stone is great but the amount of people that go through there is annoying.
The ride out the east gate to Cody is real nice. Great looooooooooooong sweeping curves to blast around.
Ride safe and dress warm I've also seen snow in early June.

Mike, I'm planning the same trip from PA to Yellowstone and several places in that area. The list some friends provided is as follows:

Hope this helps you some..... T

ps... Planning to ride out the last week of June

I went through Glacier last year and I loved it. If you can make it up there it is well worth it but you may want to check their web sight and find our if the Going to the Sun road is open. I believe it was still closed the first part on June last year.

Glad the thread got started.

Also have the same trip planned from Baltimore. Looking at coming through South Dakota after the Sturgis crowd has cleared out, and entering Yellowstone from the north around Labor Day. Am I coming in too late to consider camping?

20 miles west of Chicago.
As has been said, you may run into snow in early June in Yellowstone, and if you want to ride the Beartooth, which is a great ride, check with the Montana highway department ahead of time to make sure it's open. It can get cold up there, even in summer, so be prepared with respect to clothing. Pay attention to the "Do not Feed the Bears" signs in the park and especially keep away from those cute little cubs looking for a handout; mom won't be far away, maybe up a tree, and if you get too close to the cubs, or they to you, you won't believe how fast something that big can move.

I was there around Labor Day a few years back. The weather was great but it can change quickly. Most temps were in the 80's (depending on elevation) but one night in West Yellowstone it got down to the upper 30's. I think if you camp in the lower elevations you will be fine.

Be careful in yellowstone! My wife and I came around a curve and dead ahead in the center of our lane was a huge bull buffalo! There was not room to go around him on either side of him. The cars coming from the other direction were all stopped and taking pictures .All we could do was wait and creep along behind him untill he decided to get off of the roud. I was just hopefull he didnt turn around and fall in love with the VISION and we would be in his way.

WHAT A SIGHT!!!! You will have a great trip. We stayed in Jackson so we would have to drive next to the Tetons both up and back every day!
