Always willing to take the bike apart and fearful that I will have parts left on re-assembly, I finally undertook the various light mod installs on my black '08.  I also had intended to add the newly purchased Flying V chrome trunk rack (Cycleops), but ran into trouble lining it up and had no help available - so that one waits for the next service at the dealer.  Back to the lights -  I installed the Stingerz 99 led according to the great instructions by SongFan.  While in there, I did the G/H wire cutting mod for the stock tail lights and then, with the trunk stripped down, proceeded to complete the 4710 install using Firehawk's instructions.  Everything went as hoped and no issues after completion.

But, here's my question:  After thinking about it, I considered hooking the Stingerz99 into the 4710 as well, but re-considered and left it just as a stock brake light.  One reason was, I was concerned about mixing the LED with the 4710 and wasn't anxious to add a heat generating load equalizer to the CB compartment.  Also, and this is what I'm most interested in hearing opinions on, I felt like the flashing Stingerz would just make the back end too busy and defeat the purpose.  On the other hand, my dealer wrench had told me they had installed several 4710's and removed them because in daylight the Vision bulbs are washed out and it doesn't really show well enough.  I was going to post a video my install, but there are plenty of them around, so I didn't post it.  The only difference in mine would be the added Stingerz light to the 4710.

Any thoughts on tying the Stingerz to the 4710 vs. leaving them stock would be welcome.  If photos or video would be helpful, I can always take some, but there are good videos out there already.

I split the 99 in half . This gives you turn signals & brake lights . The tour pack lights do not show that well by themselves . All my riding buddies say all they see are the LED 99's , which light up great .
I hope this helps .

That's an interesting idea I didn't consider.   Thanks.

I ended up going with 2 24 LED and 1 30 LED strip. I wired them to the Vision's built in trailer wire pigtail that is tied up and taped off along the right side wire harness. There are four unused wires here that I've determined are specifically meant for a trailer connection, left turn, right turn, ground, and a power lead. The beauty of these wires is that the left and right turn's also carry the brake signal, with the turn's overriding the brake function, just as if it had a controller built in (probably does).

I wired the 2 24 segments to the left and right leads from the built in pigtail, and the middle 30 segment strip directly to the pink wire on the back side of the harness connector at the front of the right saddle bag. It all works beautifully.

I did about the same thing as Turk on my 2008, except I tapped into the wire harness with Positaps. I used amber 24 LED for the turn signals and red 30 LED for the center brake light. No controller needed or used. Friends tell me the extra lights are very visible. Mine do not function as running lights, only activate with the turns or the brake. The stock running lights on the trunk are unchanged.

Since you've already got the 4710 and the 99 LED string, I would suggest you cut the string in two and hook them up to the 4710, leaving the stock trunk running lights stock. Then the 99 LED sting will act as additional running lights, turns, and brake and greatly add to your rear visibility.

Putting these in the gap between your trunk and the trunk lid and wiring them up to work as additional running lights, turn signals, and brake lights. Some use a 99 LED string as a wraparound brake light alone. Some use a 99 LED cut into two halves, and a 4710 controller, to make them work as additional running lights, turn signals, and brake light. Some, like me, just use three strings consisting of two 24 LED for the turn signals and a 30 LED for the brake without the need for a controller. http://www.customdynamics.com/stingerz_led_accent_lights.htm#Indivi...

The 4710 is a Kuryakyn 4710 Run/Turn/Brake controller that lets you convert your turn signals into a combination system. I have one on my Sport Cruiser, converting the rear turn signals into running lights, turn signal, and extra brake lights. If any bike ever needed more rear lighting, it's the Sport Cruiser. Before somebody asks about the color of the rear turn signals and the legality of it all, the 2000 SC has red lenses on the rear. It was the only model and year to do so. The 2001SC had amber, as did all the other models of the V92 series.

Thanks that makes sense now. So goes right in the gap where you open the trunk lid? That's like the 109 guys they do that to the gap in the rear solo cowl and put a night rider light in there that acts as signal/turn/brake as well. never can have to many lights...

Yep. They come with sticky tape on three sides. I just removed the protective film on the top and rear and pressed them up against the "L" of the flange on the trunk lid. You'll have the lid open for this--it's easy. Figure out exactly where you want them before you remove the protective film, because they stick good. I learned as I went that it works better if you just start removing the film at one end and pressing the string into place as you go, pulling the film out of the way as you go. A helper pulling the two strings of film out while you press the LEDs into place is very helpful. You'll need to run the wires down through the trunk ( through the right side hinge hole) to the wire harness. You'll need to extend the wires to the LED strings. Run a piece of heavy wire, like a coat hanger, down through the trunk and tape your extension wires to it, then pull them up. I used Positaps to connect to the bike's wiring. Custom Dynamics has those too. Just order them with your LEDs. Some folks have found a connector that they were able to plug into, but my 2008 didn't have that, so I used the Positaps. Your 2011 might have the connector.

I want to clarify that the connections I made are off of the Vision's built in trailer wire's that are taped off along the ride side of the bike. There is no need to "tap" them or splice them. They are already stripped and ready to be used. Additionally, they are set up with the functionality of a trailer converter already. In other words, there is no need for a 4710 (or other add on controller) to get them to work as BOTH brake and turn signals! Why is no one else using these wires?

The only addition I made was a center brake only light.... so I did tap the pink wire for that use exclusively. But, anyone using a split 99 LED segment for left / right and turn, need not use an additional controller... just sayin....

All my connections were made through a single 4 pin weather proof delphi connector for ease of disconnect.

Thanks for the clarification Turk. I don't think my 2008 has the trailer wires that you are describing on your 2011. Maybe I'm just blind, but I did look pretty hard for a place to "just plug in" at the time I did it and didn't find any.

Wow, year old thread revived. When I did this, I had never heard about or found the stripped trailer wires mentioned on my '08 either. I finished the mod with the 99 Stingerz as a single wrap around brake light with the 4710 flashing it as a "back off". I did the G/H cut to mod the standard brake lights but did not tie that into the 4710. Still works a year later and I see no important reason to change it now.

Want to blow the dust off this thread. I installed 99 stringers on "13" and understand few options as to hook up. I would love to find the trailer wires but without pick of location afraid to shrewd whole harness looking for it. Couple of pics would be priceless. Can I just razor blade the middle of the stringer to separate or is there more to it. Any help would be appreciated, thanx.

I am considering the same mod. Could you tell me how you split the 99 in half to work as both? I've seen the mod for just the brake light and it seems fairly straight forward, but how did you get it to work for turn signals as well? Pictures or instructions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Rico,

You cut the LED in half. Wire the two half LEDs with a brake hot. The left LED gets the left turn signal hot. The right gets the right hot all from the 4710. You need to seal where you cut the 99 Stinger.

I will send you a PM with my phone number if you would like more detail. Also you loose one or two LEDs where you cut the strip.

I just ordered 3 red light strings a couple of weeks ago to use as turn signals and brakes on my '13 Vision. What I did was measure how long I wanted each segment to be and bought the ones that matched the length I wanted to work with. My total cost was only $75 for two 12s and a 30 with the promoter pack, for better adhesion, the positaps and shipping included in the total.

Ken,
That would be great, thanks! I appreciate the offer, and if/when I run into any issues, I will surely give you a call.
