I am always thankful that I am healthy enough to be planning another road trip.
I am hoping that I will be able to ride for awhile yet but you never know.

I was checking the Iron Butt website to see if they had updated it. I was checking to see how many riders had completed the 49 states in less than 10 days ride last year.

Four riders completed the 49 states in less 10 days IBA ride in 2010, one of the four was 66 years old and one was 72!!!!! Wow!

That is inspiring! There is hope.

Here's my motivational poster. It hangs on my bedroom wall. If not this year, than definitely next.
8,224 miles

Nozzledog - that's quite the route. I may have to print that out myself. Have you estimated how long it would take you?

Nozzledog,
Some travel notes to keep in mind,

In Montana, as soon as the snow slows down, they're out ripping up the roads so you may come around a bend on I-90 @ 80+ only to see a sign warning that the next 45 miles are ground pavement and that includes bridge ramps that are ground down to the edge of the bridge deck where they have thoughtfully installed a 4 inch X 4 inch wedge of asphalt 'transition' to 'help you onto the bridge deck', don't worry after the first one surprises you it's easy to do the soprano parts of your favorite opera. (rode on MT 12 from Lolo Hotsprings to nearly the Idaho border while it was being paved, it's an odd feeling riding through slightly graded asphalt, kinda like oatmeal, makes the bike a real mess too!).

CHEVRON and TEXACO stations donot exist in Montana, so have another gas card or lots of cash. Carry a 1 gallon 'drop tank' in a saddle bag in case the station you reach is closed for the night (most bigger stations leave one set of pumps acitve overnight for card users). And you'll see the bugs coming for miles @ night boresighted on your headlights.

try to do the Rockies during the day because the views will blow the top off of your 'punkin haid' plus the road may have some 'issues' and they are easier to see in the light.

If you are going into Canada and smoke, take only two packs as the extras will be taken by the C eh N eh D eh -ian border folks, DONOT take any sort of firearm into Canada either, pistols get taken and even rifles can be a contested issue with them.

TAKE YOUR PASSPORT!!! You can't get back into the U.S. without a passport or enhanced drivers license.

Canadian drivers are certifiable! picture in your mind, L.A. afternoon traffic where everyone is on acid and it's raining, Canada 1 is a five lane dragstrip and idiots will drive for a couple of miles in the center turn lane just to pass someone.
As you get up the ALCAN, when you can, gas up! 'cause ya never know! Stuff gets more expensive the further you get from 'civilization' because it's all freight so it goes 'by the pound'. When you stop to eat, don't say 'I'll have...' ask, 'what have you got?'
Moose are stupid beyond belief, 1300# and a brain the size of a Cocker Spaniels, they wiil charge for no reason (including trains and airplanes) and move pretty quickly too.

Thanks for the advice. I found out about the roads on a summer trip I did pulling a 400 lb. trailer on a 12 day 7700 mile ride. It was a leisurely ride and I stopped before dark to setup camp each night.
This will be an IBA ride. I may have to alter it a little, I Donny know if they accept Four Corners Monument as a receipt for
all four states. Otherwise I will have to jog into Utah (+23mi) . Also, it only goes 21 miles thru Wyoming and I'm not sure about the businesses hours right thru there (hwy 212) so I may drop down to the I90. It adds 75 miles, but only 45 minutes.
I plan on taking the whole 10 days, but will push harder at the beginning and stop at hotels when I feel the need.

I hope to get to Oklahoma by day 1 (1100mi), Mobile by day 2 (1050mi), West Virginia day 3 (825mi), Boston day 4 (785mi), Cleveland 5 (745mi), Soiux City 6 (840mi), Billings 7 (1060mi), Moses Lake 8 (805mi), Prince George 9 (655mi) and Hyder on day 10 (440mi).

Except for majors like I-95, a number of state highways along the East Coast sort of meander along with a 36 way, all stop intersection about every 5 miles, it takes you a while (especially if, like we are, you're from the Real Coast) before you realize that all they've done is widen and pave the revolutionary War days horse trails, so about every 5 miles you come to an all stop intersection.

Billings to Moses Hole will be challenging as a great deal of it from a bit West of Missoula until you get to Spokane is the Rocky Mountains (and you'll fight prevailing gusty side winds from the left from West of Spokane to almost Cle Elum). Don't know what your plan is once you get back into the U.S. from TGWN (the great white North) but by going Pendelton ,OR. to Boise on 84 over the Blue Mtns. (plus you can get a picture of the sign saying 'deadmans camp rest area) just East of Boise you can pick up and run 93 the length of Nevada to Sin City then 15 home (plus it'll keep you off of I-5). the run West bound from Billings on I-90 will truly demonstrate to you the line 'purple mountains majesties'

The two 'East Coast' days I planed are 745 and 785mi, two of the shortest days. If it runs long going to Moses Hole, I was thinking of stopping in Kennewick either before or after I tag Oregon. It's a 100-140 mile swap making day 9, 755-795 miles. I was shorting the Canada days because I wasn't to sure on the roads, and incase I needed to make up time like that.
I have Family in Portland, so I will prob. head there. Your route sounds good from there, I might try it.

Per the IBA rules you need a receipt for each state and each receipt needs to show the time, date and place.

Four Corners Monument has shops set up on all four sides, but I don't know what theirs receipts look like. Utah would be the only one I'd need from there. Anybody been there? I'm going to post this question on the IBA site as well, once they unlock it for me.

maybe I missed something when I was there back in the summer. All I saw was the sign and you couldn't even get to the actual monument due to renovations. I saw no structure of any sort, so I don't know where you would get a receipt from.

I can't imagine renovations would take a year. I'm not willing to risk it though just to save 30 minutes of riding, unless someone knows for sure that I can get a Utah receipt.

All I got to see at four corners was Tex, from Nebraska riding a Vision. I'm all alone riding in the middle of nowhere, and I look in my rear view and I see a Vision coming up behind me. Now what is the chance of that? Tex was riding with a BMWer buddy going to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I was on my way to Barstow and to stop at the South Rim along the way. Just one of those "That was cool!" moments.

All we got to see of the 4C was Closed for Renovations Keep Out!

The one time I was there was on my way home from Sturgis 10 years ago. I wasn't even thinking about 49 states in 10 days then. I hadn't even heard about the IBA until 2002 when I did my first saddlesore. When I broke my back at work, I thought it was the end of LD rides. After a good spinal fusion and ditching HD for a Vision, I found myself back in the saddle with maps on my wall.

We were there late this last summer (2010), and got to the monument, took pics, etc. There were vendors setup, but only in the Arizona area. There were booths all the way around, but 3/4 were unoccupied.

Do you have to have receipts? You could take a pic with your foot covering all 4 states at one time to prove you were there. Maybe with the current 'USA Today' laying on the ground at your feet?

Receipts are required.
Standing there doesn't really prove that you rode through all 49 states.

Nope, receipts are the rule. Many IBAers have said just getting the receipts has taken about 5-10 hrs of their trip.

 Ride Maps -

The map from my 48 state ride. A total of 8200 miles and then a 550 mile ride home.

And the map from my 49 state ride. The 49 state part was 8818 miles and a 2500 mile ride home. Plus it was 550 miles to get to the starting point.

A question for all you long riders.

On my Gold Wing I ran the Dunlop DSST runflat car tire that gave me a lot of peace of mind on long trips in out of the way places - especially riding two up with my wife.

What do you do to prepare for having a flat out there all by yourself ? Do you take Fix a Flat ?

Or has anyone used this stuff - http://www.ride-on.com/
