So I recently switched over to Shell T6 5w40 in my Vision. Seems to be working great but how do you REALLY know.

So I sent off an oil sample to Blackstone Labs for an oil analysis. No more speculation - I have real data.

Its a PDF file....I will attach it if I can.

Basically I ran the bike to 3185 miles and sent the sample off.

They reported that the oil showed typical wear expected in this type of engine with oil that had been in for 2200 miles. They recommended going 3500 and checking again.

The only "anomaly" was fuel. Before taking the sample your SUPPOSED to ride the bike for 30 mins. The day I was changing oil it was rainy and cold.....I started it, let it idle for 5 mins......rode around for 5 mins and called it good.

Its either that or perhaps Im just getting a bit of fuel in the oil - it wasnt a major amount. I am running the Cycle Dragon exhaust and have NOT reprogrammed - so perhaps its running a bit lean.

Anyways - T6 is now JASO MA certified.....along with this report - Im calling T6 plenty good enough to run in my bike.

......probably still stay around 3000 miles change interval....but I will be less strict about it - if Im busy I will ride it out past 3000 without worry.

Great job.
How much did they charge you?
I would think the gas came from start up. Lean condition would not put gas in the oil rich would or bad valves.
That's why you never want to twist the throttle before starting the bike.
I have heard that some napa auto stores can send your oil out for analyzing. I wounder how victory oil would read out.
Come spring I'm going to do this. I'm running amsoil.

$25 gets you the basic analysis

It costs an extra $10 for them to check the additive package to tell you how much more life the oil had.

$35 well spent......now I KNOW T6 is safe for use in my Vision and that it works very well.

On their website you can request the free kit......its all the stuff you need to take the sample.

Great company....will use them again.

Im a big fan of any of the heavy duty diesel oils for use in my bikes. All my bikes, ATVs, lawn equipment etc....they all get some form of 15w40 diesel oil. Ive used the Chevron, Mobil.....heck all of the common ones - depending on what was on sale. Never had a problem.

I was wanting to run some in my Vision and inching that way when I read about the T6 here.....for the extra money considering the investment of the bike - I will go with the synthetic T6 over the standard.

...but yeah, water cooled....air cooled, singe cylinder to inline 4s - all my bikes get diesel oil. It really is a decent oil for the application....and at a darn good price.

Also was using the NAPA Gold filter on that Vision if anyone wants to know that info.

I just spray my engine with PAM before each ride.

PAM sometimes smears. I prefer leftover bacon fat. Leaves the crank with a good coating when the bike cools off, so warm up doesn't cause damages.

Damn, now you've got ME talking oil ....

Thanks for the oil report. I've been using T6 for a while, too cheap to get it tested, not I rest easier. Thanks!

Been using the full syn 5-40 in my Jackpot for going on 4 years now and prolly 7-8 oil changes. Runs quieter, shifts better, neutral is easier to find (especially as the miles add up), and it seems cooler. It's been down the 1/4 mile almost 20 times with this oil in and launches like a jack rabbit, not to mention the occassional wheelies, all with no clutch slippage at all. For $19/gallen, it's a no brainer. And now hearing the analysis results it only confirms the bikes like it.

ak, thank you for providing the report. I began using the 5w40 prior to you giving the results and have been pleased with it. I have foresaken AMSOIL at this time and will stay with the Rottella 5w40.

The greatest benefit I see is that with 10w40 I had a bad start up ticking, with the 5w40, it is all but gone, with a less than a second duration. I've set myself to change my oil every 5,000 miles, which even with that interval I don't have the rattle I would get with the semi-synthetic that I was using when I first got the bike. The lower cost is just a perk and add to that by using the SuperTech filter ST7317 for under three bucks.

Considering that I'm in the high-mileage bracket with no issues, I'm quite pleased with my bike.

Not going to get into the frey, but remember. Lower oil temps do NOT mean lower engine temps. Ussually the inverse is true

For those that are bored to death because of lousy weather, or if you just can't get enough oil knowledge, here is a great read, if you?re into it, on the technicalities of oil and lubrication in general. By the way, a lot of what you will read here will turn everything you thought you knew about oil and lubrication principals on their respective heads. Have fun if you choose, or just skip it if you choose not.

You're welcome. I get mine from here, and order filters for all my vehicles at once so the shipping cost is amortized. The WIX 51356/NAPA Gold 1356 is currently selling for $4.61. http://www.fleetfilter.com/
http://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51356.html

The same filter fits both my bikes, my buddy's Goldwing, and my Kubota mower, plus a bunch of different cars and other motorcycles and industrial equipment.

I kind of doubt that Victory, Honda, and Kubota make their own filters.

Dredging up this old thread to say this....I tried it & I'm back to Mobil 1 20W-50 V-Twin. With the T6, I had a heck of a time finding neutral, & it lacked the smoothness I had come to expect when shifting. I'm not saying this is a bad oil, just that I couldn't get over the difference in how the gear box acted.
