A phone GPS with MAPS is what I use and it works everywhere a regular GPS works. Now, some phone GPS apps do not have maps and need a cell connection to D/L the map as you move along. So those will not work in places where you do not get a cell phone signal. But dedicated phone apps such as Tom Tom and Magellan include the maps and work everywhere. I put it in my glove box...... (you guys can't see the damned GPS in the sun anyhow) and just listen to the directions!

I have been using a Garmin Nuvi 255 on a Ram mount
for 4-5yrs without any problems.. As far as sun - I usually turn the screen downward away from the sun...

You do not need a GPS signal nor a cell signal for a Smartphone to work. Cache the map before going to an area you know there is no signal. When the phone loses the signal it will use the cached map. When the phone picks up the signal again it will switch back. You can take your phone anywhere in the world Google has a map and it will work as a GPS...even Zimbabwe.

I used a Garmin StreetPilot III for many years on a RAM mount, but with technology these days, I just use my Android Phone (Samsung Epic 4G) if I need a gps. In this area area at least, there isn't really any need to see it. It just speaks the directions to my headset. (I have speakers in my helmet).

If I find I need to see it, I'll just get a ram mount for it.

I use a TomTom 550XXL. Huge screen and easy enough to read even in the sun. I did make a sun shiedl for it that helps quite a bit. I have it in a waterproof box on a ram mount. Works well with gloves. I believe I paid around $125 a few years ago. Nice part it came with free life time map updates.
