Our XC still makes that same noise after 4000 miles. My wife, bless her heart, it's her theory that if you can hear that noise coming from the engine/gearbox, your radio isn't turned up loud enough.

Your wife is a keeper.

Well, I had to try the whole sportbike theory of not locking up the rear wheel while downshifting. So, I got going up around 55, then pulled in the clutch and started dropping gears to first. I got to first somewhere around 40 and dropped the clutch, rpms rose quite quickly to around 5000 or so and the rear tire didn't do anything except for traction and slowing down, quite different from my old KZ1000 whose rear tire would lock up if you did that. Very interesting, that must be one of those cheap ass parts we have in our bikes.

So, then my follow on question would be, would it be installed for safety or performance purposes. If for performance purposes, it seems most of us don't utilize this machine to its fullest potential and there's a racer to be unleashed under all that plastic. This has got me to thinking. What if, you were to remove all the body work and give it some really close skinned exterior like a sport bike, what would it look like. Lose the saddlebags, squish the front end closer to the framework, trim the front fender. Get some handlebars more forward, so you have a bit more of an attack angle. What would this package perform like. What would it look like?

I really don't know much about this , I know my buddy who races sports bikes talk about this . he claims it's there so you don't lock up your rear wheel when you down shift ????

if the hoosierdaddy is right, which he is, then your good buddy who races sport bikes knows this also. That is the reason, I believe, you cannot push start these bikes (has anyone proved otherwise?). Let the engine stall while the clutch is disengaged and if you let out the clutch to refire, it will lock up the wheel, been my experience each time I tried to refire in that circumstance.

Also, I accidently hit the kill switch rolling along about 70+ and it keep rolling. Of course, I never disengaged the clutch but it refire when I turn the switch back to RUN.

I would concur with you VADADDY, and this would make complete sense as far as not being able to roll start these bikes. No I haven't tried it, I'm willing to take the word of a whole host of good folks that have in one way another indicated that it hasn't worked for them.  I just chalk it up as another design feature that makes these Vic engines so darn tough. Ya it may make a little noise, but I'm OK with it. (Kinda reminds me of the drive-train of an M1 Abrams tank when they get to really moving.... ;-)

I think you guys are referring to a "slipper clutch". High end sport bikes have them, Visions don't.

Earplugs! Stops mechanical noise and improves radio clarity. And protects your hearing as a side benefit.

x3 to the ninth power.

I wear the disposable foam earplugs, you can buy them in large quantities cheap. Gives your ears a nice break from the wind noise, engine clatter and the Visions stereo (mostly the iPod) is very clearer.
