I have eliminated the need to purchase a oil filter every time I change my oil. This also eliminates oil filter waste in our landfills, and I added some bling to the bike. I use the K&P Engineering oil filter which I purchased from Conquest, a bit pricey but it is a life time filter. Easy to work with, easy to clean and it looks good.

RR0 - as a user of the cleanable filter, has the thought to clean it more often ever cross your mind? Since you're not purchasing a new one, and it wouldn't take much to pull, clean, replace and top off, would put even more life to an oil change. Just toying with a few ideas, as it has always made sense to go with a cleanable filter, I just don't know why I haven't yet. Thanks in advance.

No I haven't, as dark as my oil comes out at the 2500 mark I never gave it a thought. I have recently changed oil brands (I did not say that) and am watching how this brand fairs in the vic. I apologize in advance for mentioning oil.

Lloyds sells the K&P also and can be bought through this sight to help support the geat work that is done here.

thanks for pointing that out wroman, I'm on the verge of going cleanable, wish I thought about it earlier. No need to apologize on the oil RR0, no matter what someone says about oil there will always be a rebuttal, expect it and glean out the information you are looking for. The cleanable filters are a metal mesh, and I wonder if that is what makes it black.

Is there anyone that has used the cleanable filter and tested their oil to see how well it stands up? I trust using a cleanable filter, but curious as whether there is an advantage beyond not throwing away all the replaceable ones? Since there is not much to clean, I wouldn't have a problem cleaning the filter every 2,000 miles and then changing the oil every 6,000 or so. Just throwing out the thoughts who have gone with the cleanable filter.

I think there's more to the change interval than just debris in the filter.  Things like general breakdown and viscosity - part of why Vic went with the neutral finder and their explanation of how oil interval changed due to that.  I happen to use the K&P chrome filter, but haven't sent out the oil for testing.  I also don't tell myself that it is cost effective, bcz at about 3 changes a year you would need at least 4 years or more to ever amortize the filter vs. paper.  The advertised advantages of flow rate, filtering, cosmetic appearance, etc were enough for me.  That Lloyd sells them seems to imply (correct me if I'm wrong) some acceptance of their worth or at least that he doesn't believe they are worse than paper.

Bottom line, I don't think I'd extend the OCI to 6000 just based on cleaning the filter.  I've never changed it without the oil at the same time, so I'm not sure how much oil would be lost with the case full.  Sounds like it could get messy, but I would do it more often if loss could be controlled.

Good point on losing oil flint, the next time I change my oil I'll pull the filter first to see how the flow is with a full crank case. I'm not looking at cost effectiveness as much as I'm looking at discarding the old filter somewhere. I beleve we should have stayed with cloth diapers but some how the industry convinced someone that we were using to much water to wash them, thus saving the environment as our landfills is getting filled with disposable diapers. Not an environmentalist, but it makes sense to me to use the cleanable filters.

On the OCI I've been around the 3, 4, 5,000 mark for some time now with no adverse affect. I've gone to 6,000 a couple of times, and figured that the filter cleaning then adding of new fresh oil, though a small amount will hold up. All the reports that I think I've read says that the oil is fine even after 5,000, and another grand shouldn't hurt. But all of this is worth the consideration.

I have swapped a filter on a friends bike with out draining the oil first. You loose a small amount of oil, I wold guess slightly less than the the filter holds. I did it quick and a shop towel was enough to catch the oil. For me the majority of the oil stayed in the filter.
