Ok, so I have to thank those out there that answered some of my questions, I appreciate the help and fast reponses. I have a regular TomTom GPS, not a motorcycle version. I couldn't bring myself to pay for another GPS, so I decided to make a few modifications and mount this one, detachable of course, to the Vision (aka Selena).

First, normal GPS's are not waterprrof, so I bought a Ram Mount "Aqua Box." It has a flexible touch screen front, so the GPS still works the same. I didn't want a permanent mount, so I mounted the ball on the dash with good double sided adhesive. About 6 months of use, and no problems yet.

My other challenge was that I wanted to hear the audio instructions through the radio. I also wanted to free up the side compartment where I was running the power cord.

On the right side of the dash, there is a small square shaped connector that is the input for the audio, and also carries power. The connector is an "AMP mini multilock." I found a place to buy these, and the male pins on the internet. Ordered two just in case I messed on up. Very cheap, only about $5 for the two plugs and 12 pins.

Next, I went to a local electronics store (not Radio Shack, because they barely do electronic parts anymore) and bought two 5 pin Din connectors. My advice, get the slightly larger ones because soldering the small ones is impossible if you are older than 7 years old.

The voltage on the bike is 12V DC. Needed to be regulated down to 5V DC for TOmTOm. Different GPS units require different voltages. Check on the outside of your GPS and you should see what yours requires.

I wanted a sealed voltage regulartor, so I talked to Adam at Powerlet. They make a power cord that regulates the voltage down to 5V. He was awesome, he sent me just the regulator. I would have ordered the whole cord, but I needed a right angle mini USB to fit inside the box. They didn't make one, but said he'd ship me just the regulator. If you do this, have him mark which side is input and which side is output. Like I said, very nice, and he marked it for me.

I took the stock TomTom charger and cut the cord. Inside you find 3 wires. The red is power, the black is ground, and white is for data, but since it's not hooked to a computer, I cut the white cord. Next, I ran this down to the male end of my Din connector. I soldered the power and ground to the pins, and used some heat shrink on them to make sure nothing grounded out.

Next, I took an old pair of stereo headphones and cut this cord. I identified the right and left channels and wound them together. Got the ground, and then took those wires and soldered them to the same male connector.

Then I started on the AMP mini multilock connector that ties into the bike. Spock had posted a break down of the colors and what they were. I think my harness might be a little different, because my colors on the ike didn't match what he posted, so here is what I found from the manual and doing a test with my Volt meter.

Dark Grey with Pink Strip = Power (+)
Black with White Stripe = Ground (-)
Blue with Orange Stripe = Audio (+)
Green with Blue Stripe = Audio (-)

Use a thin wire for this part of the harness. The mini multilock pins are very small. Stripped off a small segment of wire and fed them into these males pins. Used a small pair of needle nose pliers to crimp them, but it takes some work to get them right. It can't be too mis-shappen or it won't fit in the muli lock.

I took the power regulator and attached it to the mini multilock, making sure the pins were in the corresponding holes, here's an effort to describe the locations, the top is where the catch is:

---- 3 ----
1-------- 6
---- 4 ----
2-------- 7
---- 5 ----

3 = Power (+)
5 = Ground (-)
6 = Audio (-)
7 = Audio (+)

Once I got the pins in the right place (I learned by trial and error) I put hot glue behind them to keep them in place. I then ran the leads to the female din, soldered them to the corresponding male end, and viola!

I tested the harness, took it for a 50 mile ride and it powers the GPS and I can hear the audio. The weird thing is that even with the external speakers turned off, the voice directions ONLY come through the external speakers, not in the headphones. I think the reason for this is that the intercom and headphones in the helmet are run through the CB/ICOM. The harness is wired right into the stereo so that the GPS would work without the intercom.

Here are some pics of the finised product. I didn't take any pictures during construction, sorry, I was too busy cursing at the solder joints. Any questions, please feel free to ask and I will help in anyway that I can.

I feel like I stuck it to the "man" by building this and saving myself money for another GPS. Plus, I really like my GPS and all my favorites are already saved. Please feel free to let me know what you think.

Marc

Don't see the pics. Sounds like you did it right. Where did you buy the Amp mini Multilok connector. I tried my local auto supply store, they could get them, but minimum quantity was 1,000

I found them on a website called http://newunitedracetech.com/. The shipping was really slow. I called them, and it's one guy, he sounded like he was just selling off some parts that he had to order in bulk to get for another project. But, they did arrive, and the price was cheap. The photos should be up now, had to resize them to get them to post.

divesharc,

Great job! I hope to do the same type of job on my Vision.

it seems newunitedracetech.com has been updated, the shipping calculator shows $8.50 s/h to BC, Canada. I talk to the same guy, he told me that it is just him, and the company is a start up, based off his own project, but it has grown far beyond liquidating excess parts. seemed like a decent guy, we'll see how long my parts take to arrive.

thanks again for posting this link!

Mouser Electronics stocks the connectors which are made by Tyco Electronics.

The male plug part number.
Tyco Part Number: 917318-4
Mouser Part Number: 571-917318-4

Thanks for this post I've been researching installing a Garmin Zuma 660 on my Vision. I thought I was going to have to cut out the stock connector. After finding out the type of connector used, I was able to find them at Mouser a good source for electronic parts.

For anyone reading this post, an update to the Tyco mini-multilock connectors. First, there is suppsed to be a special took to crimp the male ends on to the wire. They are tiny. I did it with a pair of needle nose, but my suggestion, since they are so cheap, it to order extra of them. Chances are, you'll screw one up...I did. I went slow, crimped a little on each side until I had them secure.

You put the male ends onto the wires. Next, you have to thread them into the plug. My advice it to get a dental pick, or something with a small point. Push the end into the plug by hand, then take the pick and push it further down in. I discovered that I had not seated one end in far enough and it came out, losing the audio signal. The plug has a little rubber pience that you're supposed to thread the male ends through, get them into the plug, then push the rubber piece down on top. Kinda like a cork in a jar. It keeps the water out. I got pissed after the 20th attempt and ditched the rubber stopper and put hot glue on the end to waterproof it.

I am happy with the way it turned out, but I wish I could have found better disconnects. My advice it to put a disconnect in between the bikes harness and your GPS unit. Don't think that you can disconnect it at the stock harness. There is a snap piece and it ain't gonna happen easily. If you're going to leave it on permanently, cool, but otherwise, it's a PITA. The hardest part was soldering these little thin wires onto the male female disconnect ends. Good luck and if anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help however I can.
