I'm currently running a car tire (Potenza 019 - 195/55/16) and the bike has been lowered (approximately 1.5"). I'm considering getting a Hitch Doc so that I can use a cooler rack for some extra storage (not sure I want to go the trailer route yet). I've done a search on this issue and see where some say you need to use a 185/55/16 car tire (CT) to avoid clearance issues with the hitch, but others have said they are running the 195/55/16 and a hitch with no problem.

I don't want to get into a CT discussion, but would like to hear from those that have a hitch and are running a 195/55/16 CT as to whether you have any issues with clearance, rubbing or bottoming out with the tire.

thanks.

Not sure where you read where folks are running the 195 tire and a hitch without any problems. I think only one person tried going this route and they found that the clearance was way to close and slightly rubbed the tire and they switched to the 185

I ran the Potenza 195 w/hitchdocand it was WAY too close and did rub when two up taking a good compression on the rear. My wife is a little light thing but just her little weight added made the difference. I'd recommnd the 185/55 if I was going hitch and Darkside, as this combination gives you a good 1/4" on both sides of the tire which is more than enough. Clearance is tight with the 195/55 so air pressure and load become far more critical.
As to the cooler rack verses trailering? Loads of disadvantages with the cooler rack not to mention brake light obstruction. Of course there are many disadvantages to trailering as well. If you're concerned about trailering you may want to go with a single wheel trailer. Liter, compact and you won't know it's even behind you. If you ARE leaning towards the cooler rack I'd STRONGLY recommend the Bushtec hitch due to the higher tongue weight capacity.

I looked at the cooler rack, which I like. A friend has one on his Gold Wing, it works good on that bike, better taillight set up. With the Vision tail lights, I did not think it was good. There are light kits for cooler racks, but by the time you add it all up, it was major $s. I just added the rack to the trunk.

Thanks for all your comments. I'm just looking at different options, but looks like I will need to change tires if I decide to go with a hitch.
